The organization PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. PETA suggests replacing Phil with a giant coin for this traditional event.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, suggesting that instead of using the traditional groundhog for the Groundhog Day holiday on February 2nd, they should use a giant coin.
PETA expressed that the person in question is not a professional in the field of meteorology, and they believe that he should be treated with more respect rather than being used purely for generating tourism revenue

PETA approached the club in 2022 and suggested using a persimmon tree as an alternative to Phil for weather prediction.
During that period, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly knowledgeable in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in alignment with his natural instincts, rather than having expertise in meteorology.
PETA is advocating for the groundhog club to start a more compassionate February 2nd and allow Phil (and his companion) to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in the natural behaviors that he is currently denied in his Plexiglas enclosure, as stated by Newkirk.
For over a century, people from nearby areas and distant places have been visiting Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual event where a small, furry animal named Phil comes out of his temporary residence. The purpose of this tradition is to determine whether Phil sees his shadow, indicating that there will be six more weeks of winter, or if he doesn't see it, suggesting an early arrival of spring
