PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who has been used to predict the weather annually in the United States, as they believe he is being exploited. PETA suggests replacing him with a giant coin instead.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that he is not a professional weather expert, and it is unfair to continuously use him solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should replace Phil with a persimmon tree as a means to forecast the weather.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with nature, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be transferred to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his enclosed Plexiglas space. Newkirk expressed these thoughts.
For over a century, people from both the local community and those visiting from distant places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather there to witness the appearance of Phil, a small furry creature, as he emerges from his temporary dwelling. His presence serves as an indication of whether winter will continue for another six weeks or if an early spring is on its way.
The film Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray in the role of a weatherman who is unhappy and trapped in a recurring time period, was premiered in the year 1993.
