PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who currently plays a role in predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. In the letter, they have asked the club to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration that occurs on February 2.
PETA expressed their concern by stating that the person in question is not an expert in meteorology, and they believe that he should not be taken advantage of annually for the sole purpose of generating tourism

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
According to Ingrid Newkirk, the President of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and embracing a natural way of life, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd. Their goal is to relocate Phil, along with his companion, to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live a life free from concerns, without being handled and spun around, and be able to partake in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For over 130 years, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Their purpose is to witness the appearance of Phil, a small and furry creature, as he emerges from his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it determines whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring
