PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, Tom Dunkel, asking them to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person being referred to is not a meteorologist and should be treated with more respect instead of being used solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree for predicting the weather.
"At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, president of PETA, expressed that Phil is highly knowledgeable in the areas of burrowing, foraging, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being an expert in meteorology."
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by relocating Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would allow Phil to live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and be able to engage in natural behaviors that have been denied to him in his current Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from various places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the emergence of a cute creature named Phil from its temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray as a weatherman who is unhappy with his job and trapped in a never-ending cycle of time, came out in 1993.
