PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog famous for predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin instead.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day holiday on February 2nd.
According to PETA, the individual in question lacks expertise in meteorology and should not be continuously used for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a suggestion to the club in 2022, proposing the use of a persimmon tree as an alternative to Phil in predicting the weather.
"Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, mentioned that Phil is skilled in digging underground tunnels, searching for food, and embracing the natural way of living that is intended for him by nature, rather than being knowledgeable about meteorology."
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They believe that Phil and his companion should be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary, where they can live peacefully without any concerns. In this sanctuary, Phil can engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, such as being picked up and spun around.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather to witness Phil, a small and adorable creature, come out of his temporary residence. Depending on whether he sees his shadow or not, it determines if there will be six more weeks of winter or if spring will arrive early.
Released in 1993, Groundhog Day is a film featuring Bill Murray in the role of a frustrated weatherman who finds himself trapped in a repeating cycle of time.
