The organization known as PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog who traditionally predicts the weather in the United States. PETA suggests that Phil be replaced with a giant coin for this annual event.
The animal rights group sent a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned is not a meteorologist and should be treated more fairly instead of being used solely for generating tourism revenue every year.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree to forecast the weather.
PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and leading a natural life as intended by nature, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more humane February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would provide them with a worry-free life, without being constantly handled and subjected to unnatural experiences, allowing them to engage in their natural behaviors that are currently denied to them in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over 130 years, people from all over have visited Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the annual event of Phil, a small furry creature, coming out of his temporary residence. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it will determine if there will be six more weeks of winter or if an early spring is on its way.
