PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin for the task.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to substitute the well-known groundhog with a huge coin on Groundhog Day, which occurs on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that he is not a meteorologist and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree instead of Phil to forecast the weather.
"At the time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk mentioned that Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and embracing the natural way of life, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology."
PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by urging them to send Phil and his companion to a respected sanctuary. This would allow Phil to live without fear, without being handled and spun around, and to engage in the natural behaviors that he is currently denied in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local area and those visiting from other places have made the journey to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary habitat. Phil's appearance either indicates that winter will continue for another six weeks if he sees his shadow, or suggests an early arrival of spring if he doesn't see anything
