PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather, to step down from his yearly role in the United States. Instead, PETA suggests using a giant coin for this purpose.
A letter was recently sent to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, by an animal rights group expressing their concerns. The group has suggested that instead of using a groundhog for the Groundhog Day holiday on February 2nd, the club should consider using a large coin instead.
PETA stated that he doesn't have expertise in meteorology and it is unfair to continuously use him for financial gain in the tourism industry.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the idea of using a persimmon tree to forecast the weather instead of relying on Phil.
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, commented that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in his natural habitat, rather than having expertise in meteorology.
PETA is advocating for the groundhog club to start an empathetic February 2nd and send Phil (along with his companion) to a trustworthy sanctuary. This would allow Phil to live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, explained Newkirk.
For over a century, residents and visitors from various places have journeyed to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the appearance of a small, furry creature named Phil. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it is believed to determine if there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
In 1993, a film called Groundhog Day was released, featuring Bill Murray in the role of a weatherman who is unhappy and trapped in a repetitive cycle of time.
