PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, suggesting that instead of using the traditional groundhog, they should substitute it with a large coin to celebrate Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned is not a meteorologist and that they should be treated with more respect instead of being used solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree for weather predictions.
During that time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk stated that Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by urging them to send Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and instead engage in the natural behaviors that he is currently denied in his Plexiglas enclosure.
