PETA Calls for Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil: Should a Giant Coin Replace the Groundhog?

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog that traditionally predicts the weather in the United States. They propose replacing him with a giant coin.

A letter was written to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, by a contentious animal rights organization. In the letter, the group asked the club to substitute the well-known groundhog with a massive coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that the person in question does not have expertise in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.

At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.

Newkirk from PETA expressed a desire to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. The hope is to relocate Phil, the groundhog, along with his companion, to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live a life free from stress, without being handled roughly or subjected to unnatural activities, all of which he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.

Since 1887, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary residence. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates whether there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
