The animal rights organization PETA is advocating for Punxsutawney Phil to step down from his yearly role of predicting the weather in the United States. They propose that instead of using the groundhog, a giant coin should be used for this tradition.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their request to replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which falls on February 2nd.
PETA expressed their concern by stating that the person in question is not an expert in meteorology and should not be continuously used for financial gain through tourism.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they should use a persimmon tree to forecast the weather instead of relying on Phil.
At the time, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk mentioned that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in weather forecasting.
PETA is advocating for the groundhog club to start February 2nd on a more compassionate note by allowing Phil (and his companion) to be transferred to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live a life free from stress, without being handled or spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from all over have been visiting Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual tradition of observing Phil, a small and furry creature, come out of its temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
