Animal rights organization PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather on Groundhog Day in the United States. PETA suggests replacing Phil with a giant coin for the annual event.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, proposing a change for the Groundhog Day celebration. They suggest replacing the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the holiday on February 2nd.
According to PETA, the individual in question does not possess expertise in meteorology, and it is unfair for them to be continually used for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request in 2022 for the club to contemplate utilizing a persimmon tree as a means of forecasting the weather instead of relying on Phil.
At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is knowledgeable about digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being an expert in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, they can live without fear, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in their natural behaviors that are currently restricted in their Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been making their way to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. They gather there to witness the annual event of Phil, a small furry creature, coming out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it is believed to predict either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
