PETA Urges Retirement of Punxsutawney Phil: Replace Groundhog Day Tradition with Giant Coin

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. Instead, they propose the use of a giant coin for this purpose.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their desire for the club to substitute the famous groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, celebrated on February 2nd.

PETA expressed their concern by stating that the individual in question is not a professional in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of each year solely for the purpose of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree for weather prediction purposes.

"At the time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and embracing the natural way of life, rather than possessing knowledge in the field of meteorology."

According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by sending Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live without any concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure.

For over a century, people from near and far, including both residents and visitors, have journeyed to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to witness the annual event where a small and furry creature named Phil comes out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it indicates either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.

The film Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray as a weatherman who is unhappy with his job and gets caught in a never-ending cycle of time, was made available to the public in
