PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the U.S. every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin for the task.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned in the statement is not trained as a meteorologist, and they believe it is unfair for him to continuously be used solely for the purpose of generating tourism income.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a means to predict the weather rather than relying on Phil.
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
According to Newkirk, PETA is aiming to support the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live a life free from concerns, avoiding being lifted and spun around, and finally participate in natural activities that he has been deprived of in his current Plexiglas enclosure.
For over a century, people from both the local community and various places have been coming to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the special event of Phil, a small and furry creature, emerging from his temporary residence. This event determines whether there will be six more weeks of winter if Phil sees his shadow, or an early arrival of spring if he doesn't.
The film Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray as a frustrated weatherman trapped in a recurring time cycle, came out in 1993.
