PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog famous for predicting the weather in the United States every year. They propose replacing him with a giant coin for this annual event.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, expressing their concerns. They have requested the club to consider replacing the traditional groundhog with a large coin for the Groundhog Day celebration that occurs on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned is not a meteorologist and should not be used every year for the sake of generating tourism revenue, as they deserve better treatment.

PETA approached the club in 2022 with a suggestion to replace Phil, a groundhog, as the weather predictor, and instead use a persimmon tree for this purpose
According to Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, Phil is skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts rather than being knowledgeable about weather patterns.
According to Newkirk, PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd celebration. They are advocating for Phil, the groundhog, and his companion to be sent to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live a life free from concerns, without being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that are currently restricted in his Plexiglas enclosure.
Since 1887, people from both the local area and those visiting from other places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness Phil, a small furry creature, come out of his temporary dwelling. Depending on whether or not Phil sees his shadow, which indicates six additional weeks of winter, or doesn't see it, signaling an early arrival of spring, people eagerly await the result.
