PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who is currently responsible for predicting the weather in the United States on an annual basis. PETA suggests replacing Phil with a giant coin.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, asking them to replace the traditional groundhog with a large coin on Groundhog Day, which occurs on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the individual is not a professional in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of tourism profits.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree to forecast the weather.
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is skilled in digging tunnels, searching for food, and living according to his natural instincts rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
PETA aims to support the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by urging them to send Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, Phil can live a life free from stress and without being handled or spun around, and he can finally engage in the natural behaviors that have been denied to him in his current Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.
