PETA’s Proposal: Replacing Punxsutawney Phil with a Giant Coin for Groundhog Day

  • by

PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, who currently predicts the weather annually in the United States, claiming that he is being exploited. As an alternative, PETA suggests replacing him with a giant coin.

The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, suggesting that they replace the well-known groundhog with a large coin for the celebration of Groundhog Day on February 2nd.

PETA expressed that the individual mentioned is not a professional in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of annually for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting that they replace Phil with a persimmon tree to forecast the weather.

According to the president of PETA, Ingrid Newkirk, Phil is highly skilled in digging underground, searching for food, and thriving in his natural habitat, rather than being knowledgeable about meteorology.

According to Newkirk, PETA's goal is to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by allowing Phil and his companion to be relocated to a trustworthy sanctuary. This way, they can live without any concerns, free from being lifted and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that they are currently deprived of in their Plexiglas enclosure.

Since 1887, people from both the local community and those visiting from different places have been making the journey to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Their purpose is to witness the emergence of Phil, a small and furry creature, from his temporary dwelling. Based on whether Phil sees his shadow or not, it can be determined if there will be six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.

The film called Groundhog Day, featuring Bill Murray as a frustrated weatherman trapped in a repeating cycle of time, was made available to the public in 1993.
