PETA is advocating for the retirement of Punxsutawney Phil, the groundhog known for predicting the weather in the United States every year. They propose that he be replaced with a giant coin for this annual event.
The animal rights group has written a letter to Tom Dunkel, who is the president of the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. They have asked the club to replace the traditional groundhog with a huge coin for the Groundhog Day celebration on February 2nd.
PETA expressed that the person mentioned is not an expert in meteorology and should not be taken advantage of every year for the sake of generating tourism revenue.

PETA made a request to the club in 2022, suggesting the use of a persimmon tree as a weather predictor instead of relying on Phil.
During that time, Ingrid Newkirk, the president of PETA, stated that Phil is highly skilled in digging, searching for food, and living in accordance with his natural instincts, rather than being knowledgeable in meteorology.
PETA wants to assist the groundhog club in starting a more compassionate February 2nd by sending Phil and his companion to a trustworthy sanctuary. In this sanctuary, Phil can live without any concerns, free from being handled and spun around, and have the opportunity to engage in natural behaviors that he is currently deprived of in his Plexiglas enclosure, according to Newkirk.
For over a century, people from both the local community and visitors from different places have been going to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania to witness the moment when Phil, a small furry animal, comes out of his temporary residence. Depending on whether he sees his shadow or not, this event predicts either six more weeks of winter or an early arrival of spring.
The film Groundhog Day, which features Bill Murray playing the role of a weatherman who is unhappy and trapped in a repeating time cycle, came out in 1993.
