The Garth Brooks Effect: How a Diving Catch Led to a Major League Hitter’s Unconventional Batting Stance

  • by

Garth Brooks once had an influence on an MLB hitter's batting stance. Craig Counsell, who is now the manager of the Chicago Cubs, had an impressive career as a professional baseball player from 1995 to 2007.

Counsell gained a reputation for his unique and unconventional batting stance, which involved holding his bat high above the ground. The reason behind this stance remained a mystery as Counsell never provided any explanation for it.

After being appointed as the manager for the Chicago Cubs, Counsell participated in the 2024 Cubs Convention. During the event, an individual finally inquired about the reason behind his previous practice of holding the bat at a high position in the air.

He attributes the responsibility to Garth Brooks.

Counsell provides an account of his experience as a baseball player, specifically highlighting his lack of proficiency in hitting. He recalls a specific period when he was a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers and attending their spring training. In this particular training session, he struggled to land any successful hits.

During a spring training game, I hit a strong hit towards the left field. I was filled with excitement, thinking it would be my first successful hit. Determined, I lowered my head and sprinted towards first base. The crowd erupted with cheers and applause. However, as I glanced up, I was shocked to see that Garth Brooks, the famous musician, had made an impressive diving catch in left field. Sadly, his incredible play extended my streak of not getting a hit in the game to 0-4.

The individuals present at the media briefing found this narrative to be uproariously amusing

The day after, I was set free. I had a conversation with myself, questioning why I couldn't achieve any successful hits. This contemplation prompted me to raise my hands high up in the air. Surprisingly, this action proved to be beneficial.

Garth Brooks is responsible for my terrible batting stance, in my opinion.

Brooks, who is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the music industry, had a fondness for sports during his younger years. He actively participated in baseball and track and field events. Despite his efforts, he was unable to secure a place on the New York Mets team, despite having three separate opportunities to do so.
