Remembering Scotty McCreery’s Unforgettable ‘American Idol’ Audition: A Look Back at His Journey to Victory

  • by

Do you recall Scotty McCreery's amazing audition on 'American Idol'? It was clear from the start that he had a good chance of winning Season 10. This audition was broadcasted on Jan. 26, 2011, and it remains one of the most unforgettable moments in the show's history.

At the time of his audition for American Idol, McCreery was only 16 years old. The panel of judges, including Randy Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, and Steven Tyler from Aerosmith, were present. Despite his young age and appearance, with his tall and thin frame and a buzzcut hairstyle, McCreery showcased a mature and impressive deep singing voice, which would ultimately help him become the standout contestant of his season on the show.

The individual from Garner, N.C., captivated the judges with their charm even before they started singing. Lopez in particular seemed to take an instant liking to them, engaging in playful banter before enthusiastically expressing, "I really hope you have a great singing voice!"

During McCreery's audition, he chose to perform "Your Man" by Josh Turner, highlighting his impressive ability to hit low notes. Following this, Tyler requested McCreery to showcase his higher vocal range, to which he responded by singing "Put Some Drive in Your Country" by Travis Tritt.

"Oh my goodness, keep some matches, have intimate relations with a duck and observe what hatches," exclaimed Tyler in complete surprise.

After the unexpected comment, chaos ensued in the room as the other judges, technicians, and producers were caught off guard. However, the composed young man calmly responded, saying that it was nothing he hadn't heard before in high school.

All the judges unanimously agreed to advance McCreery in the competition without any doubts. From then on, he consistently delivered powerful performances week after week. Despite being only 17 years old, McCreery triumphed as the winner of Season 10 of American Idol on May 25, 2011. This made him one of the program's youngest winners ever.
