Focusrite Group CEO Tim Carroll Takes the Helm as President of the MIDI Association

  • by

The CEO of Focusrite Group, Tim Carroll, has been appointed as the President of the MIDI Association. This non-profit trade organization aims to improve MIDI technology for artists and musicians around the world. The announcement was made in Los Angeles.

Carroll has been chosen by the executive board of the MIDI Association to lead for a period of two years. This decision is significant as it coincides with a crucial phase in the history of the MIDI Association, as the MIDI technology has recently advanced from MIDI 1.0 to the highly anticipated MIDI 2.0. As this new version is beginning to be incorporated into various products and software, it creates an exhilarating time for individuals involved in the music products and associated industries.

The industry expects that Carroll, who is highly regarded and currently serves as CEO of Focusrite Group, will receive widespread approval from both the Association membership and the broader industry. Focusrite Group is the parent company of well-known synthesizer brands such as Sequential and Oberheim, as well as MIDI controller and synth company Novation. Carroll and Focusrite Group are dedicated to upholding and improving upon the legacy left by Sequential founder Dave Smith, who played a crucial role in the development of MIDI and introduced the first synthesizer with a MIDI port 51 years ago.

The MIDI Association's scope extends beyond overseeing MIDI for manufacturers and developers. They are also deeply committed to promoting MIDI innovation, music education, and the connection between music and wellness. Carroll will contribute valuable insights in these aspects as the Association begins to award grants from the MIDI Fund, which is overseen by the NAMM Foundation.

Carroll showed his excitement about his recent position, saying that this is a crucial turning point in the history of the MIDI Association. He believes that the industry has only just started to understand the possibilities of MIDI 2.0, and he is thrilled to collaborate with the MIDI Association board and its members to develop the future expressive, musical, and innovative aspects of MIDI.
