  • by

In a recent announcement from Los Angeles, it has been revealed that Tim Carroll, the CEO of Focusrite Group, has been appointed as the new president of the MIDI Association. The MIDI Association is a non-profit organization focused on improving MIDI technology for artists and musicians worldwide. This appointment is seen as an exciting development for the association.

Carroll has been chosen by the executive board of the MIDI Association to lead for a period of two years. This decision is particularly significant as it coincides with a crucial point in the history of the MIDI Association, with the recent transition from MIDI 1.0 to the highly anticipated MIDI 2.0. As this new version begins to emerge in various products and software, it is an exhilarating time for all individuals engaged in the music products and associated industries.

Carroll, who is highly regarded in the industry and serves as the CEO of Focusrite Group, is anticipated to receive widespread approval from both the Association membership and the broader industry. Focusrite Group is the parent company of renowned synthesizer brands such as Sequential and Oberheim, as well as the MIDI controller and synth company Novation. Carroll and Focusrite Group are dedicated to upholding and improving the legacy left by Sequential founder Dave Smith, who played a crucial role in the development of MIDI and introduced the first synthesizer with a MIDI port 51 years ago.

In addition to overseeing MIDI for manufacturers and developers, the MIDI Association also prioritizes MIDI innovation, music education, and the relationship between music and wellness. Carroll will contribute valuable strategic perspectives in these domains as the Association begins to allocate grants from the MIDI Fund, which is overseen by the NAMM Foundation.

Carroll conveyed his excitement about his recent position, emphasizing that this marks a crucial turning point in the history of the MIDI Association. He believes that the industry has only scratched the surface of MIDI 2.0's potential and he is eager to collaborate with the MIDI Association board and its members to develop the next innovative and artistic advancements in MIDI technology.

Keep an eye out for future updates as we continue to track Carroll's journey as he guides the MIDI Association into an exhilarating new chapter!
