Woman Calls Cops on Own Mother for Credit Card Theft: Did She Do the Right Thing?

  • by

A Reddit user is questioning her decision to involve the police when she discovered that her own mother had taken her credit card without permission to make purchases for fast food and clothes.

The woman's mother recently requested a loan of around $500 from her daughter, assuring her that she would repay the borrowed amount through Cash App as soon as she received her next paycheck. The woman declined her mother's request, and despite her mother's attempts to persuade her, she firmly stood her ground and her mother eventually dropped the matter.

The next week, though, she observed that her credit card was nowhere to be found.

She mentioned that she went online to access her account and settle her balance after receiving her check earlier that morning. To her surprise, she noticed that her balance was significantly higher than what she had anticipated. Alongside the expected charges for her electric bill, phone bill, and gas, she also noticed multiple charges that she knew were not made by her. These charges were for fast food, clothing stores, and other similar expenses.

The woman suspected there might be a technical issue, so she contacted her credit card company and attempted to recall where she might have unintentionally left her card. However, when she reached out to her mother to express her concerns about the stolen card, her mother confessed that she was actually the person in possession of the card.

After informing my mother about the incident, she reassured me not to be concerned as the item was not actually stolen but rather borrowed by her. I must admit, I became upset once I realized she was being serious. She assured me that she would transfer the money to me through Cash App as soon as she received her payment the following day. Additionally, she believed she could resolve the situation before I even realized it had gone missing.

The woman, who was very angry, instructed her mother to tear the card into pieces since she had already made it inactive. However, her mother scolded her for behaving like a spoiled child when it came to assisting her.

The situation became more intense, and I used offensive language towards her before instructing her not to contact me or come near me, and then ending the call. Following that, I contacted both the police in my location and hers to determine the appropriate jurisdiction for pressing charges.

The woman explained that her mother has been excessively calling and messaging her since the incident. She has even resorted to blocking her mother's contact. Additionally, her mother has been publicly sharing on Facebook about how the woman is responsible for getting her back into jail simply because she borrowed some money. The woman expressed her disbelief at how her mother could think of her as a selfish child, considering the circumstances.

In the section where readers can leave comments, they suggested to the woman that she should report the incident to the authorities and also discussed the possibility that her mother might have had previous encounters with the law

"Sent back to prison? So your mother has a tendency to break the law? Well, you made the correct decision. Don't give in, pursue legal action. She is not someone necessary in your life," a commenter expressed.

A person mentioned that someone's mother has engaged in credit card fraud. In the United States, this is considered a serious crime and will be treated accordingly. The person believes that the mother should have considered the consequences before committing the act. They suggest that if she didn't want to return to jail, she should have refrained from stealing.

"Do not allow her to manipulate you with guilt. It seems like there have been many instances of similar behavior in your past, and you have numerous valid reasons for your actions, not just one incident. You do not deserve to have this negative and harmful influence in your life," another person added their perspective.
