Woman Calls Cops on Own Mother for Credit Card Theft: Did She Do the Right Thing?

  • by

A woman posted on Reddit, questioning whether she made the correct decision by reporting her own mother to the police. She discovered that her mother had taken her credit card without permission to make purchases for fast food and clothing.

Recently, the mother of the woman in question requested a loan of around $500 from her daughter. The mother assured her that she would repay this amount through Cash App as soon as she received her next paycheck. However, the woman declined the request, and despite her mother's attempts to convince her otherwise, she firmly stood her ground until her mother dropped the subject.

The week after that, though, she realized that her credit card was not in her possession.

She mentioned that she accessed her online account to settle her outstanding amount after receiving her check earlier that morning. To her surprise, she noticed that her balance was significantly higher than she had anticipated. Among the expected charges for her electric bill, phone bill, and gas, she also noticed several unauthorized charges for fast food, clothing stores, and more.

The lady suspected there could be a technical error, thus she contacted her credit card company and attempted to recollect where she may have unintentionally left her card. Nevertheless, when she decided to share her concerns about the stolen card with her mother over a phone call, her mother disclosed that she was actually the one in possession of the card.

After I informed my mother about the incident, she reassured me not to be concerned because it was not actually stolen; she had simply borrowed it. I must admit, I became upset once I realized she was being serious. She insisted that she would transfer the money to me through Cash App when she received her payment the following day, and she believed she could resolve the situation before I even noticed.

The woman, who was extremely angry, instructed her mother to destroy the card because she had already made it inactive. On the other hand, the mother scolded her daughter for behaving immaturely and ungratefully when asked for assistance.

The situation became more intense, and I did use offensive language towards her before instructing her not to get in touch with me or visit me, and then ending the call. Following that, I contacted the police in both my locality and hers to determine which police station I should file charges with," she explained.

The woman stated that her mother has been contacting her excessively through phone calls, to the point where she had to block her. Additionally, her mother has been posting on Facebook about how the woman is causing her to be sent back to jail, simply because she borrowed some money. The woman expressed her confusion regarding how she was raised to be a selfish individual, according to her mother's perception.

In the section for comments, readers suggested that the woman should file charges and speculated that her mother might have had previous encounters with the legal system.

"Sent back to jail? So it seems like your mother has a tendency to break the law. Well, you made the correct decision. Don't give in, proceed with pressing charges. Having someone like her in your life is unnecessary." commented one individual.

One person commented that the individual's mother has engaged in credit card fraud, which is considered a serious crime in the United States. They emphasized that the consequences should have been considered right from the start. In order to avoid going back to jail, they suggested that the mother should not have stolen anything.

"Do not allow her to manipulate you with guilt. I have a sense that there has been a pattern of similar behavior from her in your previous experiences, and you have numerous valid reasons for making this decision, not just one isolated incident. You do not deserve to have this negative and harmful influence in your life," another person added their perspective.
