Woman Calls Cops on Own Mother for Credit Card Theft: Did She Do the Right Thing?

  • by

A woman recently shared on Reddit her dilemma of whether she made the correct decision by involving the police after discovering that her mother had taken her credit card without permission to purchase fast food and clothes.

Recently, the mother of the woman requested a loan of approximately $500 from her daughter. The mother assured her daughter that she would repay the borrowed amount through Cash App once she received her next salary. However, the woman firmly declined her mother's request. Despite her mother's attempts to persuade her, the woman stood firm in her decision and her mother eventually dropped the matter.

The week after, she realized that her credit card was nowhere to be found.

She mentioned that she accessed her online account to settle her remaining amount as she had received her check in the morning. However, she noticed that her balance was significantly higher than what she had anticipated. Along with the expected charges for her electric bill, phone bill, and some gas expenses, there were additional charges for fast food, clothing stores, and more that she knew were not made by her.

Suspecting a possible error, the woman contacted her credit card provider and attempted to recall any instances where she could have misplaced her card. Nevertheless, while discussing her concerns with her mother and expressing frustration about the stolen card, her mother confessed to being in possession of the card.

After sharing the incident with my mother, she assured me not to fret as the item was not stolen, but rather she had taken it temporarily. I must admit, I became upset once I realized she was being serious. She confidently stated that she would transfer the money to me through Cash App once she received her payment the following day, and she believed she could resolve the situation before I even realized it had gone missing.

The angry woman instructed her mother to destroy the card since she had already disabled it. In response, her mother scolded her for being uncooperative and childish in assisting her.

The situation became more intense, and I ended up using offensive language towards her before instructing her not to get in touch with me or come near me and then ending the call. Following that, I contacted both the police in my location and her location to determine the appropriate police station where I could press charges.

The woman stated that her mother has been constantly calling her, to the point where she had to block her. Her mother has also been sharing posts on Facebook, claiming that she is being sent to jail simply for borrowing some money. The mother expressed her bewilderment at how she raised a child who is perceived as stingy.

In the section where readers can leave comments, they suggested that the woman should take legal action and also guessed that her mother might have had previous encounters with the law.

"Returned to jail? So it seems like your mother has a tendency to break the law. It was a wise decision to take action and not give in. Proceed with pressing charges. She isn't someone you should have in your life," remarked an individual.

One person mentioned that the individual's mother had engaged in credit card fraud. In the United States, this act is considered a serious crime and is treated accordingly. The person suggests that the mother should have considered the consequences before engaging in such behavior. If she wanted to avoid returning to jail, the suggestion is to refrain from stealing.

"Refuse to succumb to her attempts to make you feel guilty. It seems like there has been a pattern of similar behavior in your past, and you have numerous valid reasons for taking this action, not just one isolated incident. Having this toxic influence in your life is unnecessary," another person added their perspective.
