Woman Calls Cops on Own Mother for Credit Card Theft: Did She Do the Right Thing?

  • by

A Reddit user is questioning her decision to involve the police after discovering that her mother used her credit card without permission to purchase fast food and clothes.

A couple of weeks ago, the woman's mother requested a loan of approximately $500 from her daughter. The mother assured her daughter that she would repay the borrowed amount through Cash App once she received her next paycheck. The woman declined her mother's request and despite her mother's attempts to persuade her, she firmly rejected the idea and her mother eventually dropped the subject.

However, in the week that followed, she realized that her credit card was nowhere to be found.

She mentioned that she had accessed her online account to make a payment after receiving her check in the morning. To her surprise, she noticed that her balance was significantly higher than anticipated. Among the expected charges for her electric bill, phone bill, and gas, there were also several unauthorized charges for fast food, clothing stores, and more.

Suspecting a technical error, the woman decided to contact her credit card provider and made an effort to recollect where she could have unintentionally left her card. Nevertheless, during her conversation with her mother, she shared her concerns about the stolen card, only to discover that her mother was the actual possessor of the card.

After I informed my mother about the incident, she assured me not to be concerned and clarified that the item was not stolen, but rather borrowed by her. Honestly, I became upset once I realized she was being serious. She insisted that she would transfer the money to me through Cash App when she received her payment the following day. Additionally, she believed she would resolve the matter before I even realized it had gone missing," she described.

The angry woman instructed her mother to destroy the card because she had already made it inactive, but her mother scolded her for being uncooperative in assisting her.

The situation became more intense as the person admitted to using offensive language towards the other person and instructing them to not reach out or visit anymore before ending the call. Following that, they contacted both the local police in their area and the other person's area to determine the appropriate police station to report the incident and press charges.

The woman stated that her mother has been constantly calling and messaging her to the point where she had to block her. Her mother is also sharing on Facebook that the woman is responsible for her potential return to jail just because she borrowed some money, and she is confused about how she raised a child who is unwilling to lend her money.

Commenters suggested that the woman take legal action and discussed the possibility that her mother might have had previous encounters with the law.

"Being sent back to jail? So it seems like your mother has a tendency to not follow the law? It sounds like you made the correct decision. Don't give in, pursue legal action. Having someone like her in your life is unnecessary."

One person stated that the individual's mother was involved in committing credit card fraud. In the United States, this is considered a serious crime and would be treated accordingly. The person suggested that the mother should have considered the consequences before engaging in such illegal activities. To avoid returning to jail, it would be wise to refrain from stealing anything at all.

"Do not allow her to manipulate you with guilt. It seems like there has been a recurring pattern of this kind of behavior in your past, and you have numerous valid reasons for taking this action, not just one single incident. Having this toxic presence in your life is unnecessary," another person added their viewpoint.
