Woman Calls Cops on Own Mother for Credit Card Theft: Did She Do the Right Thing?

  • by

A Reddit user is questioning her decision to involve the police after discovering that her mother used her credit card without permission to make purchases of fast food and clothing.

The woman's mother requested a loan of approximately $500 a few weeks ago. The mother assured her daughter that she would repay the borrowed amount through Cash App once she received her next paycheck. The woman declined her mother's request and despite her mother's attempts to argue, she firmly stood her ground and her mother eventually dropped the matter.

The week after that, she realized that her credit card was nowhere to be found.

She mentioned that she had accessed her account on the internet to make a payment after receiving her check earlier that day. To her surprise, the balance displayed was significantly larger than she had anticipated. She had anticipated three charges, namely her electricity bill, phone bill, and some gas expenses. However, she also noticed multiple charges that she knew were not made by her. These charges included purchases from fast food establishments, clothing stores, and so on.

Suspecting a possible technical error, the woman decided to contact her credit card provider and attempted to recall any potential locations where she could have misplaced the card. Nevertheless, as she sought solace from her concerns by confiding in her mother about the stolen card, her mother unexpectedly disclosed that she was the actual possessor of the card.

After sharing the incident with my mother, she reassured me not to be concerned as the item was not stolen but rather borrowed by her. I must admit, I became upset when I realized she was being serious. She assured me that she would transfer the money through Cash App once she received her payment the following day, and she believed she could resolve the situation before I even became aware of it.

The woman, who was extremely angry, instructed her mother to divide the card into pieces because she had already made it inactive. On the other hand, her mother scolded her for behaving like a spoiled child when it came to assisting her.

The situation became more intense, and I used offensive language towards her before instructing her not to communicate with me or visit me, and then ending the call. Following that, I contacted the police in both my locality and hers to determine the appropriate jurisdiction where I could file charges.

The woman stated that her mother has been excessively contacting her, to the point where she had to block her. Furthermore, her mother is publicly sharing on Facebook about how the woman is getting her sent back to jail simply for borrowing money, and expressing her confusion and disappointment in raising such a frugal child.

Readers in the comments section suggested that the woman should report the incident to the authorities and speculated that her mother might have had previous encounters with the law.

"Returned to jail? So it seems like your mother has a tendency to disregard the law. It appears that you made the correct decision. Stand your ground and pursue legal action. She is not a person you should have in your life," a commenter expressed.

Someone claimed that the person's mother engaged in credit card fraud, which is considered a serious crime in the United States. The person commenting suggests that the mother should have considered the consequences of her actions beforehand and implies that if she wanted to avoid returning to jail, she should have refrained from stealing.

"Do not allow her to manipulate your emotions through guilt. It seems like there has been a consistent pattern of this behavior in your past, and you have various valid reasons for your actions, not just one isolated incident. It is essential to recognize that you do not need this negative and harmful influence in your life," another individual expressed their opinion.
