A Reddit user is questioning her decision to involve the police after discovering that her mother had taken her credit card without permission to make purchases of fast food and clothing.
A couple of weeks ago, the woman's mother requested a loan of around $500 from her daughter. The mother promised to repay the borrowed amount through Cash App once she received her next paycheck. The woman declined her mother's request and despite her mother's attempt to argue, she firmly stood her ground, causing her mother to drop the matter.
The week that followed, though, she realized that her credit card was not in her possession.
She mentioned that she went online to access her account and make a payment towards her balance. She was surprised to see that her balance was significantly higher than she had anticipated. She was expecting charges for her electric bill, phone bill, and gas expenses, but there were also additional charges for fast food, clothing stores, and other expenses that she knew were not made by her.
The lady suspected that there might be a technical error, so she contacted her credit card provider and attempted to recall where she could have unintentionally left the card. Nevertheless, when she reached out to her mother to express her concerns about the stolen card, her mother disclosed that she was the person in possession of the card.
After I informed my mother about the incident, she reassured me not to be concerned because it was not actually stolen but rather borrowed. I have to admit, I became quite upset when I realized she was serious. She assured me that she would transfer the money through Cash App once she received her payment the following day. She believed she would be able to resolve the situation before I even became aware of it.
The angry woman instructed her mother to shred the card since she had already rendered it unusable. In response, her mother scolded her for acting spoiled and uncooperative when it came to assisting her.
The situation became more intense, and I used offensive language towards her before instructing her not to contact me or come near me, and then I ended the call. Following that, I contacted the police in both my location and hers to determine the appropriate precinct to file charges with.
The woman stated that her mother has been excessively contacting her through phone calls, to the point where she had to block her. Additionally, her mother has been publicly sharing on Facebook about how the woman is causing her to be sent back to jail merely for borrowing some money. The woman expressed disbelief at how she was raised to be perceived as stingy by her mother.
FAMILY DISPUTE ARISES FOLLOWING ARGUMENT OVER SHARING STREAMING SERVICE
Readers in the comments section suggested that the woman should take legal action and speculated that her mother might have had previous encounters with the law.
"Returned to jail again? So it seems like your mother has a tendency to not adhere to the law? Well, you made the correct decision. Don't hesitate, take legal action. She isn't someone you should have in your life," remarked an individual.
One person commented that the individual's mother has engaged in credit card fraud. This person emphasized that in the United States, this act is considered a serious crime and will be treated as such. They suggested that the mother should have taken this into consideration before engaging in such illegal activities. Furthermore, the commenter implied that if the mother did not want to return to jail, then she should have refrained from stealing.
"Refuse to be manipulated by her attempts to make you feel guilty. It seems like there has been a pattern of similar behavior in your past, and you have numerous valid reasons for your actions, not just one specific incident. Having this toxic influence in your life is unnecessary," another person added their perspective.
