Focusrite Group CEO Tim Carroll Takes on Role as President of MIDI Association, Paving the Way for MIDI 2.0

  • by

We have an exciting update coming from Los Angeles. Tim Carroll, the CEO of Focusrite Group, has been appointed as the president of the MIDI Association. The MIDI Association is a non-profit trade organization that focuses on improving MIDI technology for artists and musicians on a global scale.

Carroll has been chosen by the executive board of the MIDI Association to lead for a period of two years. This decision is particularly significant as the MIDI technology has recently undergone a transition from MIDI 1.0 to the highly-awaited MIDI 2.0. As this updated version is starting to become available in various products and software, it is a thrilling period for those involved in the music products and associated industries.

The selection of Carroll as the CEO of Focusrite Group, a well-respected individual in the industry, is anticipated to receive widespread approval from both the Association's members and the broader industry. Focusrite Group is the parent company of renowned synthesizer brands such as Sequential and Oberheim, as well as MIDI controller and synth company Novation. Dave Smith, the founder of Sequential and a pivotal figure in the development of MIDI, introduced the first-ever synthesizer with a MIDI port 51 years ago, leaving behind a significant legacy that Carroll and Focusrite Group are dedicated to upholding and improving upon.

The MIDI Association is not solely focused on overseeing MIDI operations for manufacturers and developers. They also have a strong interest in driving MIDI advancements, promoting music education, and supporting the connection between music and well-being. Carroll will be offering valuable strategic input in these domains as the Association begins to allocate grants from the MIDI Fund, which is overseen by the NAMM Foundation.

Carroll conveyed his excitement regarding his new position, emphasizing the significance of this moment for the MIDI Association. He believes that the industry has just started to understand the vast possibilities of MIDI 2.0 and he is thrilled to collaborate with the MIDI Association board and its members in order to shape the future of MIDI, making it more expressive, musical, and creative.

Keep watching for further updates as we track Carroll's progress in guiding the MIDI Association into an exhilarating new phase!
