The brainchild of Christian Henson, the Crow Hill Company, has recently launched Shimmer Guitar, the latest addition to their FREE Vaults series. If you're familiar with Christian's work with Spitfire Audio, you'll find the Vaults series to be quite similar in nature.
Currently, there are a total of four instruments available for free in the Vault. These instruments include the Attic Grand, R+D Strings, Celestatone, and Shimmer Guitar.
All of these instruments, including previous releases from Spitfire Audio, share a common trait, which is their unique personality or character.
The uniqueness of the character often stems from the instrument being a highly specific model, having a specific age, being recorded in a particular location, or a combination of these factors.
The Shimmer guitar is created by combining a guitar that has been aged to perfection, a classic amplifier, and the prestigious setting of one of the world's renowned orchestral recording studios.
The instrument being used is a Gibson Les Paul guitar with a hollow body, but this was not the initial intention. The initial plan was to acquire a vintage guitar that was previously owned on the day of the recording, but instead, a Kay semi-hollow-body electric guitar was obtained.
Although it initially seemed promising, certain technical problems arose with the Kay guitar, leading to its replacement with the Les Paul. The Les Paul served as a suitable and justifiable substitute.
The capturing of the audio occurred at Lyndhurst Hall, which is located in AIR Studios in London. In order to effectively capture the essence of the sound, the Les Paul guitar was paired with a classic Supro tube amplifier.
The Supro amplifier did not have any built-in effects, however, three Marshall stacks were placed on the higher level of the hall and equipped with delay effects to create the desired atmosphere.
Similar to the other instruments in the Vaults collection, the Shimmer Guitar includes six macros. These macros consist of two main controls located in the center, as well as four smaller controls
There are two main controls called Filter (low-pass) and Shimmer. Additionally, there are Drive (providing British-style dirt), Mod (giving a flange effect), Echo, and Splosh. If desired, you can adjust the settings of Echo and Splosh to have reverberation effects before it goes into the delay.
Shimmer can be described as the enchanting element that connects all things, and when a balanced combination of earthiness, openness, atmosphere, and purity is present, the result is truly captivating.
I am enjoying the selection of instruments available in the Vault at the moment, and I am anticipating the addition of more unique and delightful options, similar to Spitfire Audio's LABS collection.
If you haven't explored anything from Vaults yet, begin by trying Attic Piano and then move on to Shimmer Guitar – they are delightful small gifts available for free!
Take a look at this offer: The Shimmer Guitar is available for free to all members of the Crow Hill Company as part of the Vaults plugins collection.

Has LABS ceased to exist?

In response to the specific query, it appears to be lifeless.
It has been 7 months since the previous LABS release, which used to occur monthly. LABS was primarily overseen by Christian, and without his presence, it seems to have lost its momentum.

I don't believe there will be any new LABS releases in the future, unless Henson decides to rejoin Spitfire Audio. However, I'm glad that he is carrying on the LABS tradition with Vaults. It has a similar look and feel to LABS, and it seems like there will be plenty of new patches released for it.

Oh no! My devious scheme to incite a revolution using the comment section of a website has been foiled again. Well done, sir. Well done… *the sound of thunder can be heard in the distance*

I'm wondering why my comment about Christian being a transphobe was removed. I didn't say anything offensive, I just wanted to raise awareness about who people decide to support.
I'm sorry
True musicians prioritize the quality of their plugins and instruments rather than their origin. They have responsibilities such as jobs and bills to attend to, leaving them with no time to be concerned about the opinions and personal lives of others.

Hello Łukasz, the article focuses on a virtual instrument that is available for free. Any comments regarding politics, including gender politics, or any other topics unrelated to music production will be removed. These types of discussions tend to become heated, and I do not want that on BPB. There are many other platforms where these topics can be discussed. My goal for BPB is to create a space where people, including myself, can learn about music, engage in music-related discussions with fellow music enthusiasts, and find solace from the negativity that is prevalent on the internet. Thank you.
