Capturing Your Testimony: How to Write Powerful Christian Songs from Your Personal Story

  • by

Personal Testimony on a Blog

My childhood was filled with difficulties and challenges that are often referred to as "dysfunctional" by people nowadays. However, during the chaotic period of the 1960's and '70's, we simply considered it as a normal part of life. We had no idea that there would be a specific term for the experiences we were going through, but miraculously, Jesus intervened and had a profound impact on my life.

My life went through a profound change when someone assisted me in experiencing the overwhelming affection of Jesus for the very first time.

In a single moment, my entire life was completely disrupted. The love I experienced at that time has been my source of strength and support for more than five decades, guiding me through both the highs and lows, the successes and hardships, and even the positive moments. I can confidently say that the course of my life was permanently altered when I first experienced the love of God at the age of eighteen.

The reason for my existence and the motivation behind my work is the love of Jesus. Being a Christian songwriter, my purpose is to assist you in creating songs that can beautifully convey this incredible reality. The primary focus of Nashville Christian Songwriters and all our various platforms, such as podcasts, videos, blogs, and coaching programs, is to spread the love of Jesus to every individual on Earth.

What is your personal story or experience?

Perhaps you experienced God's love during your childhood church visits, or you turned to Him as an adult to overcome addiction. It could also be that you have been deeply hurt by a significant loss. I have had conversations with numerous Christian songwriters who have expressed interest in our coaching programs. Many of them have gone through immense pain, abuse, or divorce and are seeking ways to express their suffering and how God has helped them endure it. James Finley suggests that although God doesn't shield us from hardships, He miraculously supports us through them.

However, the question remains: how can we effectively convey our personal experiences and stories through powerful and impactful songs?

Throughout our lives, we experience both the highs and lows. However, when it comes to expressing our personal experiences in Christian songs, how can we effectively convey our testimonies? I have three suggestions that I believe will assist you in considering the most effective ways to capture your testimonials in Christian songs that will resonate with listeners and provide them with comfort, healing, and hope.

To begin with, attempt to discover a shared element in your narrative that many individuals can relate to.

It is a common experience for everyone to feel lonely or lost at times. To make people connect with your story, it is important to provide them with a way to relate to it. We should be able to find elements of our own experiences in your story, allowing us to become emotionally invested in it.

If your story doesn't capture our attention and resonate with something we have personally experienced, we will lose interest. One of our friends, Becky Norquist, who is a former student of NCS, went through the difficult experience of having five miscarriages and one stillbirth. Her music and ministry are dedicated to supporting families who are grieving, but she also includes enough universal themes in her songs that anyone who has experienced any form of loss, which is all of us, can relate to and remain engaged with her music.

Next, focus on conveying the feeling rather than getting caught up in the specifics

The idea was shared by Dave Clark, a well-known songwriter and publisher, and it has stuck with me ever since. Although it may seem contradictory at first, it actually makes sense. The initial point is to identify a central theme or emotion to base your song on. The second point is to refrain from including unnecessary details in your song that may confuse or distract the listener. If you delve too much into specifics like locations, dates, names, or other intricate details, there is a possibility of losing the audience's interest.

By identifying the shared theme and emotion in your story that resonates with me, you welcome me into your narrative. If the specific details you provide do not align with my own experiences, it can deter my engagement. Although it may seem challenging, it is possible to find the right balance of providing sufficient details without overwhelming the reader, focusing on conveying your emotions during the challenging period and ultimately redirecting the narrative towards the redemptive aspect of God's intervention in your life.

… a testimonial song is a song that portrays the ways in which God has achieved victory in your life.

It is important to recognize the unique details in your own story that we may not be able to relate to. To help with this, it can be beneficial to look for examples of songs that capture the emotion you want to convey and observe how the songwriters engage listeners without solely focusing on specific details.

Thirdly, it is important to understand the distinction between catharsis and testimonial.

If you are still emotionally and physically affected by a traumatic experience, it can be difficult to authentically compose a song that serves as a testimonial to that event. Expressing your pain and vulnerability through lyrics often appears self-centered, unless you are specifically creating a country song that captures the essence of heartbreak. If that is your intention, then go ahead and pursue it, but be aware that it is not a true testament of your experience, but rather a melancholic country song.

When considering your audience, it is important to recognize that they likely have their own share of problems and difficulties. If you simply unload your own issues onto them, they may not be willing to listen for very long. This is why therapists and journals exist – they serve as a safe place to express and process your own dysfunction and pains. It is crucial to think about how your lyrics will impact your listeners. What kind of emotional space are you creating for them? How will they feel after hearing your song?

I believe that Brandon Lake and the Elevation Worship team have successfully conveyed a powerful and uplifting message with their praise song "My Testimony" by drawing from Scripture. Instead of writing a song solely focused on your personal childhood experiences, it might be beneficial to explore positive Scriptural themes that highlight the transformative power of God in overcoming difficult situations. There are numerous approaches to sharing your testimony, so it would be worthwhile to explore different avenues before delving into the depths of your pain.

In summary, a testimonial song is one that reflects the ways in which God has brought triumph into your life. It is crucial for your emotional well-being to have a cathartic release. While it may be beneficial to write these songs for yourself, it is important to recognize the distinction between catharsis and testimonials. Catharsis involves expressing and releasing emotions, while testimonials celebrate God's victory over the challenges you have faced and His ultimate triumph in your soul, regardless of the path taken to reach it.
