Personal Testimony in Writing
My journey to finding faith in Christ began during my challenging childhood, which is now often referred to as "dysfunctional." However, during the tumultuous decades of the 1960s and 1970s, my family and I were simply living our lives without realizing that our experiences would later be categorized as such. Nevertheless, Jesus somehow intervened in my life and changed its course.
My life underwent a significant change when someone guided me to experience the unimaginable affection that Jesus has for everyone.

In a single moment, my entire life was completely disrupted. Throughout all the challenges, successes, hardships, and pleasant moments, it is this same love that has supported me for more than five decades. I can attest that the course of my life was permanently altered when I experienced the love of God for the very first time at the age of eighteen.
The reason for my existence and the motivation behind my work is what keeps me going. Being a Christian songwriter, my purpose is to assist you in creating songs that can capture the awe-inspiring truth of this faith. At Nashville Christian Songwriters, our main focus is to spread the love of Jesus to every individual in the world through our podcasts, videos, blogs, and coaching programs.
What is your personal story or experience with God? It could be that you experienced God's love while attending church as a child, or perhaps you turned to Him as an adult to overcome addiction. Maybe you went through a difficult period of immense loss that left you shattered. Through our coaching programs, I have had conversations with numerous Christian songwriters who have faced significant challenges such as abuse, divorce, or profound loss. They were eager to learn how to express their pain through their music and how God provided them with strength and support throughout their struggles. As James Finley puts it, "God doesn't shield us from hardships, but miraculously helps us endure them."
However, the question remains: How can we effectively convey our personal experiences and stories through impactful songs? How can we ensure that our testimonies are accurately and powerfully captured
As we journey through life, we experience both the highs and lows. However, when it comes to expressing our personal experiences in Christian songs, how can we effectively communicate our testimonies? Here are three tips that may assist you in considering how to effectively convey your personal stories in a way that resonates with listeners, providing them with comfort, healing, and hope.
Initially, attempt to discover a shared element in your narrative that numerous individuals can relate to.
Loneliness and the feeling of being lost are familiar to everyone at some point. By allowing others to relate to your story, you create a connection that draws them into your song. It is important to incorporate the common threads of our experiences into your narrative, so that listeners can fill in the gaps with their own stories and ultimately develop a deep connection with yours.
If your story doesn't captivate us and make us think of something we've personally experienced, we will lose interest. Becky Norquist, a friend of ours and former student of NCS, went through the difficult experience of having five miscarriages and one stillbirth. Her music and ministry are centered around providing support to grieving families, but she also includes enough universal themes in her songs that anyone who has experienced any kind of loss – which includes all of us – can relate to and continue to be engaged with her music.
Next, focus on capturing the feeling or mood rather than getting caught up in
The statement was made by Dave Clark, a well-known songwriter and publisher at Lillenas Music, and it has stuck with me ever since. At first glance, it may seem contradictory, but it's not. The initial point is to discover a central theme or emotion to base your song on. The second point is to refrain from including unnecessary details in your song that do not serve the listener. If you delve too much into specifics like locations, times, dates, names, or other details, there is a chance of losing the audience's interest.
When you find the shared theme and emotion in your story that resonates with me, it allows me to connect with your song. If the specifics of your story don't align with mine, it might deter me. It may seem challenging, but it is possible. You can learn to find the right amount of detail that focuses on your emotions during the difficult experience and then shift towards the redemptive aspect of God's intervention in your life.

It is important to remember that there are certain details in your story that are unique to you and may not resonate with others. To overcome this, it can be helpful to find examples of songs that capture the same emotions you want to convey and observe how the writers engage listeners in those feelings instead of focusing on specific details.
Next, it is important to understand the distinction between catharsis and testimonial.
When you're still affected and in pain from a traumatic experience, it can be difficult to create a genuine testimonial song about it. Expressing your emotions too heavily in your lyrics can often seem self-centered, unless you're aiming to write a melancholic country song. If that's your intention, then go ahead and pursue it, but be aware that it won't be a true testimony, but rather a sorrowful country song.
When considering your audience, it is important to recognize that they likely have their own personal struggles to contend with. If you simply unload your own pain onto them, they may not be receptive for very long. This is why therapists and journals exist; they serve as a safe outlet for expressing your dysfunction and emotional wounds. It is crucial to think about the impact your lyrics will have on your listeners. What emotions and atmosphere are you creating for them? How will they feel after hearing your song?
In my opinion, Brandon Lake and the Elevation Worship team have done an excellent job with their uplifting praise song "My Testimony" by conveying a broad message rooted in Scripture. Instead of writing a song narrating your childhood experiences, it might be more beneficial to focus on positive biblical themes that showcase God's healing power in overcoming negative situations. There are numerous approaches to sharing your personal testimony, so it's worth exploring alternative avenues before delving into the depths of your pain.
In summary, a testimonial song is a way to showcase how God has achieved success in your life. It is crucial for your emotional well-being to experience catharsis. It might be beneficial for you to write these songs for yourself as well, but it is important to understand that there is a distinction between the two types. Catharsis involves releasing emotions, while testimonials celebrate God's victory over the hardships you have faced and His ultimate triumph in your soul, regardless of the path taken to reach it.
