Sharing My Story of Finding Faith

I discovered my faith in Christ during a turbulent upbringing that society today refers to as "dysfunctional." However, back then, it was just the norm in the chaotic era of the 1960s and '70s. Little did we know that our experiences would later be categorized under a specific term, but it was through Jesus' intervention that my life took a different path.

My life went through a drastic change when someone assisted me in experiencing the indescribable affection of Jesus for the very first time.

In a single moment, my entire life was completely transformed. This very love has been my source of strength and support for more than five decades, guiding me through the highs and lows, the victories and losses, and all the positive experiences as well. I can confidently say that the course of my life was permanently altered when I first experienced the love of God at the age of eighteen.

The reason I continue to exist and do what I do is because of this. It is the motivation behind my work as a Christian songwriter, as I strive to assist you in creating songs that can convey the incredible reality of this belief. The fundamental principle of Nashville Christian Songwriters is to spread the message of Jesus' love to every person on Earth, and that is the purpose behind all of our podcasts, videos, blogs, and coaching programs.

What is your personal story of faith and transformation? It could be that you experienced God's love during your childhood church experiences, or maybe you found Him as an adult while overcoming addiction. It's also possible that you went through a devastating loss that shattered you. Many Christian songwriters who have faced significant hardships, such as abuse, divorce, or deep loss, have approached us about our coaching programs. James Finley beautifully captures this idea by stating that while God doesn't shield us from hardships, He miraculously sustains us through them.

However, the question remains as to how we can effectively express our personal experiences and stories through powerful and impactful songs.

As individuals, we all experience the highs and lows of life. However, when it comes to expressing our personal stories in Christian music, it can be challenging. To assist you in effectively conveying your testimonies through songs that resonate with listeners and provide solace, restoration, and optimism, I have three helpful suggestions.

To begin with, attempt to discover a unifying element in your narrative that resonates with a large number of individuals.

Loneliness and feeling lost are emotions that everyone is familiar with. The key to engaging people with your story is to make it relatable, allowing them to connect with it on a personal level. By incorporating elements of our own experiences, we are able to immerse ourselves in your narrative and develop a genuine fondness for it.

If your story doesn't capture our attention and resonate with something we have personally experienced, we will lose interest. Becky Norquist, a former student of NCS and our friend, has gone through the difficult experience of enduring five miscarriages and one stillbirth. Through her music and ministry, she specifically addresses the pain and grief of families who have experienced loss. However, she also incorporates broader themes in her songs that can be relatable to anyone who has suffered any kind of loss, which includes all of us. This allows listeners to connect and remain engaged with her music.

Next, focus on capturing the feeling or mood rather than getting caught up in

The statement that I can't forget was said by Dave Clark, a well-known songwriter and publisher at Lillenas Music. Although it may seem contradictory, it actually makes sense. The first point is to choose a central theme or emotion to base your song on. The second point advises against including unnecessary details in your song that may not be helpful to the listener. If you delve too much into specific locations, times, dates, names, or other details, you might lose the interest of your audience.

When you identify the shared theme and emotion in your story that I can connect with, it allows me to become a part of your narrative. If the specifics of your story don't align with my own experiences, it can make me lose interest. It may seem challenging, but it is possible. You can learn to find the right amount of detail that focuses on your emotions during the difficult times, and then shift the narrative towards the redemptive aspect of God's intervention in your life.

It is important to understand that there may be certain details in your story that are unique to you, making it difficult for others to relate. To overcome this, it can be helpful to find examples of songs that capture the same emotions you want to convey and observe how the songwriters engage listeners in those emotions rather than focusing on specific details.

Thirdly, it is important to understand the distinction between catharsis and testimonial.

If you are still emotionally and physically affected by a traumatic event in your life, it can be challenging to authentically express your experiences through a testimonial song. Sharing your pain through lyrics can sometimes be perceived as self-centered, unless you are specifically aiming to create a country song that evokes emotions and sorrow. If that is your intention, then go ahead and pursue it, but it's important to recognize that it would be more of a melancholic country song rather than a genuine testimonial.

When considering your audience, it's important to understand that they likely have their own struggles to handle. If you simply unload your own problems onto them, they may not be willing to listen for very long. That's why therapists and journals exist – to provide a safe outlet for your dysfunction and pain. It's crucial to think about how your lyrics will impact your listeners. What kind of emotional space are you creating for them? How will they feel after hearing your song?

I believe that Brandon Lake and the Elevation Worship team have done an excellent job with their uplifting worship song called "My Testimony" by conveying a message rooted in Scripture that resonates with many people. Instead of writing a song solely focused on your childhood experiences, it might be beneficial to explore positive themes from Scripture that highlight God's healing power and triumph over negativity. There are numerous ways to express your testimony, so it might be worth exploring alternative approaches before delving into personal pain.

In summary, a testimonial song is a song that showcases how God prevailed in your life. It is crucial for your emotional well-being to experience catharsis. It might be beneficial for you to write those songs for yourself as well, but it is important to understand the distinction between the two types. Catharsis is a way of releasing emotions, while testimonials rejoice in God's triumph over the challenges you have faced and His ultimate victory in your inner being, regardless of the path taken to reach that point.
