Expressing Thoughts from a Deep Inner World

There is a widespread misconception surrounding Christian songwriting, which suggests that by acquiring a sufficient amount of tips, tricks, and shortcuts, one can avoid the necessary effort of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.

In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a committed Christian songwriter. It is important to have a deep connection with God and a well-nurtured inner life, as these serve as the true sources of inspiration. With a strong bond with God and proficient songwriting skills, there is no need to resort to shortcuts. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence will always be accessible whenever you are moved by the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The modern culture of instant gratification, particularly in the realm of technology, has shaped our thinking to expect quick and miraculous results, making us believe that we can achieve the level of creativity and intelligence exhibited by CHATGPT or AI. We mistakenly assume that we can simply provide a few cues and generate a highly impressive song within a mere three seconds, leaving everyone astounded.

However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not the result of luck or shortcuts. They are created by skilled Christian songwriters who excel in their craft and effectively communicate through their art. These writers do not simply attempt to write a song and accidentally produce masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

Before the big opportunities arrived, they were already dedicated to honing their skills and striving for excellence in their craft. They consistently immersed themselves in learning how to create impactful lyrics and melodies, and how to arrange them in a way that would deeply resonate with listeners. They aimed to evoke strong emotions and create a captivating experience that had a certain indescribable "WOW" factor, which was unmistakable when heard.

According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more effort and time I dedicate to practicing, the more fortunate I become in my endeavors.

These individuals are not seeking out free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways in a deceptive manner. They are dedicated and ambitious songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft, constantly learning and honing their skills in the art of poetry and lyrics. These are the individuals who are committed to their craft, investing their time and effort into creating at a much more advanced level than what I typically observe from aspiring writers who are not as committed.

We hold a great amount of respect for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys, who have made significant contributions to the creation of Christian worship songs. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated many years to perfecting their skills, enduring various challenges in order to improve both their songs and their ministries.

No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, and this applies to even the rising star in Centricity Music, Katy Nichole. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was only fourteen years old, and her popular track "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like it went viral by luck, but that is not the case. Katy has been working on her music for many years, and we applaud her dedication.

Discovering ways to cultivate a fulfilling and abundant inner life is crucial for Christian songwriters. To enhance and articulate your faith through your music, it is important to consider these three key aspects.

Make your soul care a priority. In today's fast-paced world, we often find ourselves caught up in the busyness of life, leaving little time to take care of our own souls. While it is important to show care and support to others, we must not neglect our own need for rest and rejuvenation. Taking the time to care for ourselves is crucial for maintaining our inner well-being, which is closely tied to our overall physical and external well-being.

Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of intellectual growth and believe that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only vital components of a sanctified life. However, the most accomplished songwriters understand the significance of extensive reading. They recognize that it is impossible to create remarkable lyrics without first immersing themselves in exceptional written works. Merely relying on post-college or high school knowledge is insufficient. Engaging with network or cable news to fuel your fears and reinforce cultural biases does not contribute to intellectual growth. If you aspire to write something impactful that can withstand the test of time, it is crucial to nourish your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other inspiring works.

Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on generating fear in order to gain higher ratings. Even channels that identify as "Christian" thrive on angering viewers to keep them engaged and exposed to their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, provocative personalities, and even conservative commentators maintain their positions by attracting more viewers and securing sponsorships for their stakeholders. However, the constant stream of negativity they express is detrimental to your spiritual well-being and creative abilities. Consider abstaining from any form of news for a few weeks and use that time to sit in quiet contemplation, reflecting on God's love and goodness. You may find that your positivity begins to overflow into your music. Negativity steals your joy and intensifies feelings of fear and anxiety. Take a break and allow your heart and mind to be filled with the Spirit of Jesus once again.

When Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many others write their music, it is evident that their inspiration comes from their deep connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed, at least partially, to their talent and proficiency in creating Christian songs. This reminds me of a well-known quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who famously stated, "The more I practice, the luckier I get."

While you are growing in your ability to write Christian songs, it is important to also focus on nurturing your inner life. It is not enough to simply improve your songwriting skills; the world is in need of something fresh and original from you. Rather than recycling old phrases and ideas that have been heard for years, it is crucial to be innovative, bold, brave, and liberating in your songwriting.
