Expressing the Depths of Your Inner World Through Writing

A prevalent misconception surrounding Christian songwriting is the belief that by acquiring a sufficient amount of tips, tricks, and shortcuts, one can avoid the diligent process of learning how to create impactful songs that resonate with people.

In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks cannot replace the importance of having a deep spiritual connection with God as a committed Christian songwriter. If you possess a strong inner life and excellent songwriting skills, you won't need shortcuts or quick fixes. The ability to write effectively with clarity and confidence will always be readily available to you whenever you feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The modern era of technology and instant gratification has shaped our thinking to expect quick and easily achievable results. It has led us to believe that we can emulate the capabilities of advanced artificial intelligence models like CHATGPT. We mistakenly assume that by providing a few prompts, we should be able to effortlessly generate a remarkable song within seconds that will greatly impress everyone.

However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts. These songwriters are skilled practitioners of the art of Christian songwriting, effectively communicating profound messages through their music. They did not simply attempt to write a song one day and accidentally create masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

Before the prominent figures arrived, these individuals were already dedicated to studying and improving their artistic skills. They were continuously learning how to skillfully combine impactful lyrics and melodies to create engaging compositions that could deeply resonate with listeners. Their goal was to create something emotionally powerful, something that possessed an indescribable "WOW" factor that can only be experienced when heard.

Professional golfer Gary Player once said, "I become luckier as I put in more practice."

These writers are not seeking out free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated and ambitious songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft. They are committed to constantly improving their skills and exploring the most sophisticated poetic and lyrical techniques. Unlike many aspiring writers, they are investing their time and effort to create at an exceptional level.

We have great respect and appreciation for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys, who have made incredible contributions to Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced various challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.

No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles, also known as "hooks," overnight. This applies to everyone, including the up-and-coming artist Katy Nichole from Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was just fourteen years old. While her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like it gained sudden popularity online, it is important to note that she has been working hard on her music for many years. Congratulations to Katy for her dedication and success!

Tips for Cultivating a Deep and Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter

As a Christian songwriter, there are various approaches you can adopt to nurture a profound and gratifying inner life. Consider these three essential aspects while striving to evolve and convey your faith through your musical compositions.

Make soul care a priority. In our fast-paced and busy lives, we often neglect taking care of our own souls. Even though it is important to care for and serve others, if we don't take the time to rest and recharge ourselves, we will eventually become exhausted. It is crucial to recognize that taking care of ourselves is essential for maintaining our inner well-being, which is closely tied to our overall health and physical body.

Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of cultivating their intellects and instead focus solely on Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs as the key elements of a sanctified life. However, the most skilled songwriters understand the significance of reading extensively. They recognize that it is impossible to create exceptional lyrics without first immersing themselves in a wealth of words. If you have not continued to read beyond your college or high school years, it is crucial for you to pick up books once again. Merely consuming fear-inducing news or reinforcing your existing biases through network or cable television does not suffice. If you aspire to write something that can make a lasting impact, even beyond your own lifetime, it is essential to nourish your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other inspiring works.

Disconnect from negativity. The news on television is solely focused on increasing ratings by spreading fear. Even the channels that claim to be Christian thrive on making you angry so you will continue watching and endure their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and even conservative commentators maintain their careers by attracting viewers and securing sponsorships for their investors. However, the constant stream of negativity they emit is detrimental to your spiritual and creative well-being. Consider abstaining from all forms of news for a few weeks and use that time to sit quietly and reflect on God's love and goodness. You may find that your positivity begins to overflow into your creative endeavors. Negativity steals your joy and intensifies fear and anxiety. Take a break and allow Jesus' Spirit to replenish your heart and mind.

Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more, create their music from a place of abundant connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed, at least partially, to their expertise in crafting Christian songs. The quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, "The more I practice, the luckier I get," resonates with me as it highlights the importance of honing one's skills.

While you are working on improving your skills in Christian songwriting, it is important to also focus on nurturing your inner self. It is crucial to bring forth something new, courageous, and freeing through your music, rather than simply relying on old clichés and concepts that have been repeated for many years. The world is in need of fresh and inspiring contributions from you.
