Unveiling the Depths of Inner Creativity

A prevalent misconception surrounding Christian songwriting suggests that by simply accumulating a sufficient amount of advice, techniques, and shortcuts, one can effortlessly avoid the laborious process of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.

In my opinion, relying on tips and tricks alone is not enough for a committed Christian songwriter. It is crucial to have a deep connection with God and draw inspiration from that spiritual wealth. When you possess a strong bond with God and possess excellent songwriting abilities, you won't need to resort to shortcuts. The ability to write effectively with clarity and confidence will always be readily available whenever you feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The fast-paced nature of our digital society has influenced us to adopt a mindset that resembles a microwave. It makes us believe that we can easily replicate the abilities of advanced AI systems like CHATGPT. We expect to input a few prompts and instantly generate a song within three seconds that will amaze everyone.

However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts or tricks. Instead, these songs are crafted by skilled Christian songwriters who communicate profound messages through their art. They do not simply attempt to write a song on a whim and accidentally create masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

Before the arrival of the prominent figures, these individuals were already dedicated to studying and striving to become exceptional in their field. They were constantly learning how to skillfully combine impactful words and melodies to create captivating compositions that could deeply resonate with listeners, evoking strong emotions. They aimed to create something truly remarkable, possessing an indescribable "WOW" factor that can only be understood once experienced.

According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more he dedicates time to practicing, the more fortunate he becomes in his game.

These individuals are not searching for free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways with the intention of taking advantage of them. They are dedicated songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft, constantly seeking to improve their skills and knowledge in the art of writing lyrics. These individuals are committed to their craft, investing their time and effort to create music at a much more advanced level than most aspiring writers who are not willing to put in the same amount of dedication and hard work.

We greatly appreciate individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their incredible impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without the powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone" by Chris Tomlin. However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced numerous challenges in order to enhance their songs and ministries.

No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, and this is especially true for Katy Nichole, the rising star signed to Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was just fourteen years old, and her hit "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like a lucky viral success, but in reality, she has been dedicated to her craft for many years. Congratulations to Katy on her hard work and success!

Ways to Cultivate a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter

As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous approaches you can take to develop a deep and gratifying inner life. Here are three essential factors to consider while striving to nurture and articulate your faith through your music.

Make soul care a priority. In our fast-paced and busy lives, we often neglect taking care of our soul. It is important to remember that while serving and caring for others is important, we cannot neglect our own need for rest and rejuvenation. Taking care of ourselves is crucial for maintaining a healthy inner life, which is interconnected with our physical well-being and the care we give to our external life.

Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of nurturing their intellects and mistakenly believe that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only essential components of a holy lifestyle. However, the most skilled songwriters understand the significance of delving deep into various written works. They recognize that it is impossible to create exceptional lyrics without first immersing themselves in an abundance of outstanding literature. Merely relying on news from network or cable channels to fuel your fears and feed into your cultural biases does not suffice. If you desire to compose something that can truly make a lasting impact, it is crucial to enrich your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other sources of inspiration.

Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on generating fear to increase their ratings. Even stations with a "Christian" label aim to make you angry in order to keep you watching and endure their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and even conservative commentators maintain their positions by attracting high ratings and securing sponsorships for their stakeholders. However, the constant stream of negativity they promote is detrimental to your spiritual well-being and ability to be creative. Try abstaining from consuming any news for a few weeks and instead, spend that time in quiet contemplation, reflecting on the love and goodness of God. You will likely notice a shift towards greater positivity in your songs. Negativity steals your joy and intensifies fear and anxiety. Take a break and allow your heart and mind to be filled with the spirit of Jesus once again.

Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more, have a unique ability to write from the abundance of their connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed, at least partially, to their talent as Christian songwriters. I am reminded of the famous quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who emphasized the importance of practice in increasing one's chances of success.

While you work on building your ministry in Christian songwriting, it is important to continuously nurture and cultivate a deep personal life alongside honing your songwriting abilities. It is essential to offer the world something fresh, daring, courageous, and freeing through your music, rather than simply rehashing phrases and ideas that have been heard for many years.
