Expressing a Deep Inner World

There is a prevalent misconception surrounding Christian songwriting that suggests if you acquire enough advice, techniques, and shortcuts, you can effortlessly evade the necessity of putting in the effort to master the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.

In my perspective, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a devoted Christian songwriter. It is important to have a deep spiritual connection with God and a well-developed inner life, as this serves as a valuable source of inspiration. By possessing strong songwriting skills and a rich inner life, there is no need to resort to shortcuts or hacks. The ability to write with clarity and confidence is always accessible, especially when one feels the presence of the Holy Spirit within their heart.

The influence of our modern fast-food culture has ingrained in us a mentality that resembles the speed and convenience of microwaves. It tricks us into believing that we can possess the abilities of artificial intelligence, like CHATGPT. We expect to effortlessly generate a remarkable song within a matter of seconds by simply providing a few prompts, and that it will be universally acclaimed.

However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not written by those who rely on shortcuts or hacks. Instead, these songs are created by Christian songwriters who are skilled practitioners of their craft. They communicate at a profound level through their art and do not simply attempt to write a song one day and accidentally produce something as powerful as "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

Before the prominent figures arrived, they were already dedicating themselves to studying and striving for excellence in their craft. They were continuously learning how to skillfully combine impactful words and melodies to create compelling compositions that could deeply touch and resonate with listeners. They strived to create something emotionally powerful, something that possessed an indescribable "WOW" factor that can only be understood when experienced.

According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more time and effort he puts into practicing, the more fortunate he seems to become in his performance.

These individuals are not actively seeking free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated and determined songwriters who are already engaged in their craft. They are committed to learning and practicing advanced poetic and lyrical techniques. These are the individuals who are putting in the necessary effort and time to create music at a much higher standard than most aspiring writers are willing to invest in their own work.

We hold great respect for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys due to their remarkable impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is hard to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, it is important to remember that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have experienced their fair share of challenges in order to enhance their songs and ministries.

No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles overnight, and this is true for everyone, including the emerging artist Katy Nichole from Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was just fourteen years old. Although her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like it gained viral success by chance, this is not the case. Katy has dedicated many years to honing her craft. Congratulations to her for her hard work and success!

Tips for Cultivating a Flourishing Inner World

As a Christian songwriter, there are various approaches to nurturing a fulfilling and meaningful inner life. Here are three essential factors to consider while endeavoring to expand and convey your faith through your music.

Make soul care a priority. In the midst of our busy schedules and chaotic lives, it can be easy to neglect taking care of our inner selves. However, it is important to remember that while we should continue to care for and serve others, we must also take the time to rest and replenish our own souls. No matter what self-care looks like for you, it is essential for maintaining a healthy inner life that is interconnected with the well-being of our outer lives and physical bodies.

Nourish your intellect. Christian songwriters often overlook the importance of intellectual growth, assuming that Bible study, prayer, and worship songs are the sole key to a holy life. However, the most talented songwriters understand the significance of delving deep into reading. They recognize that it is impossible to produce incredible lyrics without first immersing themselves in a wealth of knowledge and inspiration. Merely relying on news from television networks or cable channels to fuel your fears and reinforce your cultural biases is insufficient. If you aspire to create impactful and enduring works, it is essential to nourish your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other sources of inspiration.

Disconnect from negative influences. Cable news is solely focused on generating fear and anxiety in order to boost their ratings. Even channels that claim to be Christian often thrive on angering their viewers to keep them engaged and watching their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and conservative pundits also rely on high ratings and sponsorships to maintain their jobs. However, the constant stream of negativity they spew is detrimental to your soul and stifles your creativity. I suggest taking a break from consuming any kind of news for a few weeks and dedicating that time to quiet reflection on God's love and goodness. You may find that this shift in focus allows positivity to overflow into your endeavors, such as writing songs. Negativity steals your joy and amplifies fear and anxiety. It's important to take a pause and replenish your heart and mind with the spirit of Jesus.

Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more express their creativity from the abundance of their connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed, to some extent, to their expertise as Christian songwriters. I greatly admire the quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who famously stated, "The more I practice, the luckier I get."

While you focus on honing your Christian songwriting skills, it is essential to simultaneously cultivate a deep and meaningful spiritual life. It is crucial to offer the world something fresh, daring, courageous, and freeing through your music, instead of simply recycling old phrases and ideas that have been heard for years.
