Expressing from a Deep and Meaningful Inner World
A widespread misconception about Christian songwriting is that by simply acquiring a sufficient amount of tips, shortcuts, and techniques, one can somehow avoid the diligent effort required to master the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.
In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks cannot replace the importance of having a deep spiritual connection with God as a devoted Christian songwriter. When you possess a strong connection with God and possess good songwriting skills, there is no need to resort to shortcuts. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence is always accessible to you, especially when you feel the inspiration of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The fast-paced digital culture we live in has shaped our thinking to expect quick and instant results, making us believe that we can emulate the capabilities of advanced AI systems like CHATGPT. We often assume that we should be able to generate a song that will amaze everyone within a matter of seconds by simply entering a few prompts.
However, based on what I have seen, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts or easy solutions. Instead, these songs are crafted by skilled Christian songwriters who effectively communicate profound messages through their art. They do not simply attempt to write a song on a whim and accidentally stumble upon masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."
Before the arrival of the prominent individuals, these individuals were already dedicated to studying and striving for excellence in their field. They were continuously learning how to skillfully combine impactful words and melodies to create captivating compositions that could deeply touch the emotions and resonate with listeners. These compositions possessed an indescribable "WOW" factor that was difficult to articulate, but unmistakable once experienced.
Gary Player, a professional golfer, once said that the more he practices, the more fortunate he becomes.
These individuals are not seeking out free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways in a dishonest manner. They are dedicated songwriters who are already actively working on their craft, constantly learning and practicing advanced poetic and lyrical techniques. These individuals are committed to their craft and are putting in the necessary effort and time to create at a much higher level than most aspiring writers are willing to do.
We have a great admiration for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys due to their remarkable impact on Christian worship songwriting. It's difficult to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced numerous challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.
No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or "hooks" overnight, and this applies to even the rising star Katy Nichole from Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was fourteen years old and her hit "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like it gained viral success by chance, but that is not the case. Katy has been working hard at her music for years. (Congratulations to Katy!)
Tips for Cultivating a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter
As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous approaches to nurturing a deep and gratifying inner life. Here are three key considerations to bear in mind while striving to expand your faith and convey it through your music.
Make soul care a priority. In today's fast-paced and busy world, we often neglect taking care of our own souls. Although it is important to care for and serve others, if we don't also take time to rest and replenish ourselves, we will eventually become exhausted. It is crucial to recognize the significance of self-care and its role in maintaining our inner lives, which are interconnected with our overall well-being and physical health.
Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of engaging their minds, assuming that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are sufficient for a holy life. However, the most exceptional songwriters understand the value of extensive reading. They recognize that it is impossible to craft remarkable lyrics without first immersing themselves in a wealth of words. If you have not continued to read beyond your college or high school years, it is vital for you to pick up books again. Merely consuming fear-inducing content or reinforcing your cultural biases through network or cable news does not suffice. If you aspire to write something with a lasting impact, something that will transcend your own existence, it is imperative to nourish your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other sources of inspiration.
Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is focused on creating fear to increase their ratings. Even the "Christian" stations aim to make you angry so that you continue watching and endure their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio, shock jocks, and conservative pundits only keep their jobs by attracting viewers and securing sponsorships for their shareholders. However, the constant flow of negativity they emit is detrimental to your soul and creativity. Try abstaining from any news for a few weeks and utilize that time to peacefully contemplate the love and goodness of God. Then, observe if your positive energy doesn't start overflowing into your music. Negativity steals your joy and heightens fear and anxiety. Take a pause and let Jesus' Spirit fill your heart and mind once again.
Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many others are able to write from a place of abundance in their connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed, at least partially, to their talent and expertise as Christian songwriters. I greatly appreciate the famous quote from Australian golfer Gary Player, who once said, "The more I dedicate myself to practice, the more fortunate I become."
While you are working on improving your skills in Christian songwriting, it is important to also focus on nurturing your spiritual life. It is essential to offer something fresh, daring, courageous, and freeing to the world through your music, rather than simply rehashing old phrases and ideas that have been heard for many years.
