Expressing the Depth of Your Inner World

There is a widely believed misconception regarding Christian songwriting that suggests if you acquire sufficient knowledge about techniques, shortcuts, and strategies, you can effortlessly evade the effort required to master the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.

In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a Christian songwriter. It is crucial to have a deep connection with God and a rich inner life to draw inspiration from. With a strong bond with God and excellent songwriting skills, there is no need to resort to shortcuts. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence is always accessible whenever you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The prevalence of our fast-paced digital culture has conditioned us to expect instant results, leading us to believe that we can possess the abilities of CHATGPT or AI. We believe that with just a few prompts, we should be able to effortlessly generate a mind-blowing song in less than three seconds, captivating everyone.

However, from what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by individuals who rely on shortcuts or quick fixes. Instead, they are crafted by skilled Christian songwriters who excel in their art and effectively communicate their message. These writers do not simply attempt to write a song and accidentally create masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

Even before the arrival of the prominent figures in their field, these individuals were already dedicated to studying and improving their skills in their craft. They were constantly learning how to create impactful lyrics and melodies, constructing captivating compositions that could deeply touch the emotions and hearts of the audience. Their work had a certain indescribable quality that left listeners in awe, a remarkable factor that could be felt and recognized instantly.

According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more time and effort he dedicates to practicing, the more fortunate he finds himself on the golf course.

These individuals are not searching for free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways as a means to further their craft. They are dedicated songwriters who are already actively engaged in learning and refining their skills in the art of poetic and lyrical composition. These individuals are determined and committed, investing their time and effort to create at a much more advanced level compared to most aspiring writers who are not willing to put in the same level of dedication.

We greatly appreciate individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their remarkable impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without the powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone" by Chris Tomlin. However, it is important to remember that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have encountered numerous challenges while refining their songs and ministries.

No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, and this is especially true for Katy Nichole, a rising star in Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs online since she was just fourteen years old. While her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like it gained sudden popularity, it's actually the result of years of hard work and dedication. Congratulations to Katy for her success!

Ways to Cultivate a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter

As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous approaches to fostering a fulfilling and enriching inner life. Below are three essential factors to consider while striving to nurture and convey your faith through your music.

Make soul care a priority. In our fast-paced and demanding lives, we often neglect taking care of our own souls. Although it is important to care for and serve others, if we do not attend to our own need for rest and rejuvenation, we will eventually become exhausted. It is essential to recognize the significance of self-care and how it contributes to our overall well-being, as our inner life is interconnected with the care of our external life and physical health.

Nurture your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to neglect their intellectual growth, assuming that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only important aspects of a holy life. However, the most successful songwriters understand the importance of deep reading. They recognize that it is impossible to create exceptional lyrics without being filled with knowledge and inspiration. If you have not continued your reading journey since college or high school, it is crucial for you to pick up books again. Merely consuming fear and biased information through network or cable news will not suffice. If you aspire to write something impactful that surpasses your lifetime, it is essential to nourish your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other inspiring works.

Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on generating fear and maintaining high viewership. Even channels that claim to be Christian often provoke anger to keep viewers engaged and watching the advertisements they sponsor. Talk radio, shock jocks, and conservative commentators also rely on ratings and sponsorships to secure their positions. However, the constant stream of negativity they spread is detrimental to your spiritual well-being and creativity. Consider taking a break from consuming any news for a few weeks and instead, spend that time in quiet contemplation, reflecting on the love and goodness of God. You may find that your positivity and joy begin to overflow into your creative endeavors. Negativity steals your happiness and amplifies fear and anxiety. Take a step back and allow Jesus' Spirit to fill your heart and mind once again.

Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many others draw inspiration from their deep connection with God when they write their music. However, their success can also be attributed to their talent and expertise as Christian songwriters. A famous quote from Australian golfer Gary Player, "The more I practice, the luckier I get," resonates with me and emphasizes the importance of honing one's skills in order to achieve success.

While you work on honing your skills in Christian songwriting, it is important to remember the importance of nurturing your personal growth. It is necessary to offer something fresh, daring, courageous, and freeing to the world through your music, rather than simply regurgitating ideas and phrases that have been around for years.
