Expressing from a Deeply Personal Perspective
There is a prevalent misconception surrounding Christian songwriting, suggesting that by acquiring a sufficient amount of advice, shortcuts, and techniques, one can evade the challenging process of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people's hearts.
In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks cannot replace the importance of having a deep and meaningful connection with God as a dedicated Christian songwriter. If you possess this connection and possess strong songwriting abilities, you don't need to resort to shortcuts or quick fixes. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence will always be readily available to you whenever you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit guiding you.

The prevalent fast-paced nature of our digital culture has influenced us to adopt a mindset that resembles a microwave – expecting instant results and believing that we can emulate the capabilities of advanced AI models like CHATGPT. We mistakenly assume that we should effortlessly generate a highly impressive song within a matter of seconds by simply providing a few prompts.
However, based on what I have witnessed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts. Instead, these songs are composed by skilled Christian songwriters who effectively communicate through their art. They do not simply attempt to write a song on a whim and accidentally create masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."
Before the arrival of the more experienced individuals, they were already deeply engrossed in their studies and striving to become proficient in their artistic field. They were consistently dedicating themselves to learning how to construct impactful lyrics and melodies, creating captivating compositions that could deeply touch the souls of their listeners. These compositions possessed an indescribable "WOW" factor that was both emotionally stirring and difficult to put into words, but unmistakable when experienced.
According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more time and effort I put into practicing, the more fortunate and successful I become.
These individuals are not seeking out free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways in order to further their skills. They are dedicated songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft, constantly seeking to improve their poetic and lyrical abilities. These are the individuals who are committed to putting in the necessary effort and time to create at a much higher level than most aspiring writers are willing to commit to.
We greatly appreciate individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their incredible impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is hard to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these writers have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced numerous challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.
No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or "hooks" overnight, and this is particularly true for Katy Nichole, the rising star of Centricity Music. Katy has been posting songs since she was just fourteen years old, and her hit single "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like a lucky viral success, but in reality, she has been working hard at her craft for years. Congratulations to Katy for her dedication and persistence!
Tips for Cultivating a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter
As a Christian songwriter, there are several approaches you can take to develop a deep and fulfilling inner life. Here are three important aspects to consider as you aim to nurture your spirituality and convey it through your music.
Make your own well-being a priority. In the midst of our busy and chaotic lives, it can be easy to neglect taking care of ourselves. However, if we constantly focus on caring for others without attending to our own needs for rest and rejuvenation, we will eventually become exhausted. It is important to recognize that tending to our own well-being is crucial for maintaining our inner life, which is intricately connected to our overall health and physical body.
Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of intellectual growth and believe that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only essential components of a holy life. However, the most skilled songwriters understand the significance of deep reading. They recognize that it is impossible to craft exceptional lyrics without first being filled with profound thoughts and ideas. If you have stopped reading extensively after college or even high school, it is crucial for you to pick up books again. Merely consuming fear-inducing news from network or cable channels does not suffice. If you aspire to write something impactful that transcends your own lifetime, it is imperative to feed your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other inspiring works.
Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on instilling fear in order to boost their ratings. Even the so-called "Christian" channels thrive on making you angry so that you continue watching and endure their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and even conservative commentators maintain their employment by attracting high ratings and securing sponsorships for their shareholders. However, the constant stream of negativity that they emit is detrimental to your soul and hampers your creativity. Consider abstaining from any form of news for a few weeks and utilize that time to quietly reflect on the love and goodness of God. You will likely find that your positivity starts to overflow into your music. Negativity steals away your joy and heightens feelings of fear and anxiety. Take a break and replenish your heart and mind with the spirit of Jesus once again.
Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more create their music and lyrics based on their deep connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed to their talent and proficiency in the field of Christian songwriting. This reminds me of the renowned quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who stated that the more he practiced, the more fortunate he became.
While you are working on improving your skills in Christian songwriting, it is important to also focus on nurturing your personal inner life. It is crucial to bring something fresh, daring, courageous, and freeing to the world through your music, rather than relying on recycled phrases and ideas that have been heard for many years.
