Crafting Powerful Christian Songs: The Importance of a Rich Inner Life

  • by

In the world of Christian songwriting, there is a widespread misconception that simply acquiring enough tips, tricks, and shortcuts can allow one to avoid the necessary effort of learning how to create impactful songs that resonate with people.

In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not as valuable as having a deep connection with God as a committed Christian songwriter. When you possess a strong connection with God and excellent songwriting abilities, you don't need any shortcuts. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence is always accessible to you when you feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The modern culture of instant gratification through technology has influenced us to adopt a mentality of quick results, making us believe that we can emulate the capabilities of CHATGPT or AI. We believe that we should be capable of generating a song within a matter of seconds by providing a few prompts, and that it will instantly amaze everyone.

However, based on what I have witnessed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by individuals who rely on shortcuts. These individuals are skilled practitioners of the art of Christian songwriting, effectively communicating their message through their craft. They didn't simply attempt to write a song one day and miraculously create something like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

They were already dedicated to learning and improving in their craft before the more successful artists arrived. They were always educating themselves on how to create impactful lyrics and tunes that could deeply resonate with listeners, something that had a special and indescribable quality that could be felt when heard.

According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more I dedicate myself to practicing, the more fortunate outcomes I tend to experience.

These individuals are not actively seeking free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated songwriters who are already committed to their craft, constantly learning and practicing advanced techniques in poetry and lyrics. These individuals are putting in the effort and investing their time to create at a much higher level than most aspiring writers are willing to do.

We hold great admiration for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys due to their remarkable impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine the absence of Chris Tomlin's "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone" in our lives. However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated significant time and effort over the years to perfecting their skills and overcoming various challenges in order to enhance their songs and ministries.

No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, and this is especially true for the rising star in Centricity Music, Katy Nichole. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was only fourteen years old, and her recent hit "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like a result of sudden viral success, but that is not the case. Katy has been working hard and dedicating years to her craft. Congratulations to Katy for her achievements!

Discovering ways to cultivate a fulfilling and abundant inner life is essential for Christian songwriters. Here are three essential principles to consider while striving to nurture and convey your faith through your music.

Make soul care a priority. In our fast-paced and overwhelming lives, it can be challenging to find time for self-care. However, neglecting our own need for rest and rejuvenation will eventually lead to burnout. While it is important to care for and serve others, we must also prioritize taking care of ourselves. This self-care is essential for maintaining a healthy inner life, which is interconnected with our overall well-being and physical health.

Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook their intellectual growth and believe that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only important aspects of a holy life. However, the most skilled songwriters understand the importance of reading extensively. They recognize that it is impossible to craft exceptional lyrics without first immersing themselves in literature. If you stopped reading after completing college or even high school, it is crucial for you to pick up books again. Merely consuming news from television networks or cable channels that fuel your fears and reinforce your cultural biases is not sufficient. If you aspire to write something impactful that transcends your lifetime, it is imperative to feed your mind with outstanding literature, poetry, and other inspiring works.

Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on inciting fear in order to boost ratings. Even channels that claim to be Christian often rely on anger-inducing content to keep viewers engaged and exposed to sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and conservative pundits also rely on generating high ratings and attracting sponsors to maintain their positions. However, the constant stream of negativity they promote can have detrimental effects on your spirit and creativity. Consider taking a break from consuming any kind of news for a few weeks and instead use that time to reflect quietly on God's love and goodness. You may find that this shift in focus allows positivity to overflow into your music. Negativity steals your joy and contributes to feelings of fear and anxiety. Take a pause and replenish your heart and mind with the spirit of Jesus once again.

Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more derive their writing inspiration from their deep connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed to their talents and abilities as Christian songwriters. A well-known quote by Australian golfer Gary Player perfectly captures this idea, as he once said, "The more I practice, the luckier I get."

While you focus on nurturing your talent for Christian songwriting, it is important to also prioritize the growth of your personal spiritual journey. It is crucial to offer something fresh, daring, courageous, and freeing to the world through your music, rather than simply recycling clichéd lyrics and concepts that have been heard for years.
