Expressing the Depth of Your Inner World

There is a prevailing misconception surrounding Christian songwriting, which suggests that by simply acquiring a sufficient number of tips, tricks, and shortcuts, one can avoid the arduous process of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with listeners.

In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a committed Christian songwriter. It is crucial to have a deep and meaningful connection with God and draw inspiration from it. With a strong bond with God and excellent songwriting abilities, there is no need to search for shortcuts. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence is always present and accessible whenever you feel the guidance of the Holy Spirit in your heart.

The prevalence of our fast-paced digital society has influenced our way of thinking, making us believe that we can possess the same speed and efficiency as advanced technologies like CHATGPT or AI. We assume that with just a few prompts, we should be capable of instantly generating a song that will amaze everyone within a matter of seconds.

However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who take shortcuts. Instead, these songs are crafted by skilled Christian songwriters who effectively communicate through their art. They do not simply attempt to write a song on a whim and accidentally produce masterpieces like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."

Even before the more experienced individuals arrived, they were already dedicated to studying and improving their artistic skills. They consistently sought to educate themselves on the techniques of creating impactful lyrics and melodies, constructing captivating compositions that could deeply touch and resonate with listeners. They aimed to create something emotionally powerful, with an indescribable "WOW" factor that can only be felt when heard.

According to professional golfer Gary Player, the increased amount of practice leads to an increase in luck.

These individuals are not searching for free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways in order to take advantage of them. They are dedicated songwriters who are already actively working on their craft and are constantly learning and practicing advanced techniques in poetry and lyrics. These are the individuals who are committed to their craft, investing their time and effort to create at a much higher level compared to most aspiring writers who are not willing to put in the same level of dedication.

We have great respect for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys due to their remarkable impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is hard to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's moving rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced various hardships in order to improve their songs and ministries.

No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles, also known as "hooks," overnight. This applies to everyone, including up-and-coming artist Katy Nichole under Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs online since she was fourteen years old. While her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like it gained sudden popularity, that is not the case. Katy has been working on her music for years, and we congratulate her on her success.

Ways to Cultivate a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter

As a Christian songwriter, there are numerous approaches you can take to nurture and enrich your inner life. Here are three essential factors to consider while striving to enhance and convey your faith through your music.

Make taking care of your soul a top priority. In today's fast-paced world, we often find ourselves overwhelmed and lacking time for self-care. While it is important to be caring and helpful towards others, neglecting our own need for rest and rejuvenation can lead to burnout. It is crucial to find ways to take care of ourselves, whether it be through self-reflection, relaxation techniques, or engaging in activities that bring us joy. Taking care of our inner life is essential as it directly impacts our overall well-being and physical health.

Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of intellectual growth and mistakenly believe that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only essential aspects of a holy life. However, the most accomplished songwriters understand the significance of deep reading. They acknowledge that it is impossible to craft extraordinary lyrics without first immersing themselves in a wealth of profound words. If you have not continued to read extensively since college, or even high school, it is crucial for you to revisit books. Merely consuming fear-inducing news from network or cable channels does not suffice. If you aspire to create something impactful that will endure beyond your own lifetime, it is imperative to enrich your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other sources of inspiration.

Disconnect from negativity. Cable news focuses on creating fear to increase their ratings. Even the so-called Christian channels thrive on angering you to keep you engaged and watching their advertisements. Talk radio, shock jocks, and conservative pundits maintain their jobs by attracting high ratings and sponsorships. However, their constant stream of negativity is detrimental to your soul and creative abilities. Take a few weeks off from consuming any news and instead, spend that time in peaceful reflection on God's love and goodness. You will likely find that your positive outlook will overflow into your artistic expression. Negativity steals your joy and intensifies fear and anxiety. Take a break and allow Jesus' Spirit to fill your heart and mind once more.

Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many others create their music from a place of abundant connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed to their talent and proficiency as Christian songwriters. A famous quote by Australian golfer Gary Player resonates with me: "The more I practice, the more fortunate I become."

While you are working on improving your skills in Christian songwriting, it is important to also focus on nurturing your own spiritual journey. It is crucial to offer something fresh, daring, courageous, and freeing to the world through your music, rather than simply repeating the same old phrases and ideas that have been heard for years.
