Expressing the Depths of Your Inner World
There is a prevalent misconception surrounding Christian songwriting that suggests by simply acquiring a sufficient amount of advice, shortcuts, and techniques, one can avoid the diligent process of mastering the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.
In my opinion, relying solely on tips and tricks is not enough for a dedicated Christian songwriter. It is essential to have a deep and meaningful connection with God, which will serve as a constant source of inspiration. With a strong foundation in songwriting skills and a rich inner life in God, there is no need to resort to shortcuts. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence will always be readily available whenever you feel the presence of the Holy Spirit guiding your heart.

The modern era of fast-paced internet culture has deeply influenced our thinking patterns, making us believe that we can achieve the same level of intelligence and creativity as CHATGPT or AI. We have this notion that we should effortlessly generate a remarkable song within a matter of seconds by simply inputting a few prompts.
However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who take shortcuts. These songwriters are skilled practitioners of the art of Christian songwriting and are able to effectively communicate through their music. They don't simply attempt to write a song one day and miraculously produce a timeless piece like "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."
Before the prominent figures appeared, these individuals were already devoted to studying and improving their artistic skills. They were consistently learning how to skillfully combine impactful words and melodies to create captivating compositions that could deeply resonate with listeners. They aimed to create something that evoked strong emotions and had an indescribable "WOW" factor, which can only be recognized when experienced firsthand.
According to professional golfer Gary Player, the increased amount of practice leads to a higher level of luck in his game.
These individuals are not actively seeking out free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated songwriters who are already committed to their craft, continuously improving their skills and exploring the most sophisticated poetic and lyrical techniques. These passionate individuals are investing their time and effort to create music at a much more advanced level than what I typically observe from aspiring writers who are not as committed.
We greatly appreciate individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their remarkable impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, we tend to overlook the fact that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced numerous challenges in order to improve their songs and ministries.
No one becomes great at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, and this holds true even for emerging artist Katy Nichole, who is gaining popularity under Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs online since she was just fourteen years old. While it may seem like her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" gained sudden viral success, this is actually a misconception. Katy has been working hard at her music for many years. Congratulations to her for her dedication and achievements!
Tips for Cultivating a Fulfilling Inner Life as a Christian Songwriter
As a Christian songwriter, there are several approaches you can take to nurture a deep and gratifying inner life. Here are three essential factors to consider while aiming to expand and articulate your faith through your music.
It is important to prioritize taking care of your soul. In today's busy world, we often have packed schedules and little time for self-care. While it is important to be caring and helpful towards others, if we neglect our own need for rest and rejuvenation, we will eventually become exhausted. Taking care of yourself is crucial for maintaining a healthy inner life, which is closely connected to the well-being of your outer life and physical body.
Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of intellectual growth and assume that Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs are the only essential aspects of a holy life. However, the most talented songwriters understand the significance of delving into profound knowledge. They realize that it is impossible to craft extraordinary lyrics if they themselves are not enriched with them first. If you have not continued to read extensively beyond college or even high school, it is crucial for you to pick up books once again. Consuming sensationalized news from television networks or cable channels does not count as intellectual nourishment. If you aspire to write something that can make a lasting impact and surpass your own lifespan, it is imperative to feed your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other sources of inspiration.
Disconnect from negativity. Cable news channels solely focus on instilling fear in order to boost their ratings. Even the so-called "Christian" stations thrive on provoking anger in order to keep viewers engaged and sit through their paid advertisements. Talk radio hosts, controversial figures, and even conservative commentators maintain their positions by attracting high ratings and securing sponsorships for their stakeholders. However, the constant stream of negativity they spread is detrimental to your spiritual well-being and creative abilities. Consider abstaining from news consumption for a few weeks and use that time to reflect quietly on God's love and goodness. You may notice that your positive outlook begins to overflow into your music. Negativity steals your happiness and intensifies feelings of fear and anxiety. Take a break and allow Jesus' spirit to fill your heart and mind once again.
Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more create their music from a place of abundant connection with God. However, their achievements can also be attributed, at least partially, to their expertise in crafting Christian songs. I am particularly fond of the quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who famously stated that the more he practiced, the more fortunate he became.
While you focus on improving your songwriting skills for your Christian ministry, it is crucial to also nurture and cultivate a fulfilling inner life. It is important to offer something fresh, daring, and liberating to the world, rather than relying on clichéd phrases and ideas that have been repeated for years.
