Expressing the Depths of Your Inner World through Writing
There is a prevalent misconception surrounding Christian songwriting that suggests if you acquire a sufficient amount of tips, tricks, and shortcuts, you can avoid the diligent effort required to master the art of creating impactful songs that resonate with people.
I strongly believe that having a deep connection with God and a flourishing spiritual life is essential for Christian songwriters. Tips and techniques may be helpful, but they cannot replace the inspiration and foundation provided by a strong inner relationship with God. When one possesses a profound connection with God and possesses excellent songwriting skills, there is no need to rely on shortcuts or hacks. The ability to write well with clarity and confidence is always readily available, especially when one feels the guidance of the Holy Spirit within their heart.

The prevalent fast-paced nature of our digital culture has deeply influenced our thinking, making us believe that we can replicate the abilities of advanced AI systems like CHATGPT. We often expect to effortlessly generate a complete song within seconds by simply providing a few prompts, expecting it to be a massive hit.
However, based on what I have observed, the songs that have a lasting impact on the world are not created by writers who rely on shortcuts or gimmicks. These writers are skilled practitioners of the art of Christian songwriting, effectively communicating deep messages through their music. They did not simply attempt to write a song one day and by chance create something as significant as "Amazing Grace," "In Christ Alone," or "10,000 Reasons."
Even before the arrival of the more experienced individuals, they were already dedicating their time to learning and improving their skills in their chosen art form. They consistently worked on understanding the techniques of creating impactful lyrics and melodies, and constructing captivating compositions that could deeply resonate with audiences, evoking strong emotions. They aimed to create something truly special, a kind of magic that leaves a lasting impression on listeners and is difficult to put into words but can be felt instantly.
According to professional golfer Gary Player, the more effort and dedication I put into practicing, the higher the chances of me achieving success.
These individuals are not searching for free Christian songwriting workshops or giveaways. They are dedicated songwriters who are already actively engaged in their craft, constantly learning and honing their skills in poetic and lyrical techniques. These men and women are committed to putting in the necessary effort and time to create at a much higher standard than most aspiring writers are willing to commit to.
We have great admiration for individuals such as Matt Redman, Matt Maher, Lauren Daigle, and the Gettys for their incredible impact on Christian worship songwriting. It is difficult to imagine where we would be without Chris Tomlin's powerful rendition of "Amazing Grace/My Chains Are Gone." However, it is important to remember that these songwriters have dedicated years to perfecting their skills and have faced numerous challenges in order to improve both their songs and their ministries.
No one becomes skilled at creating catchy song titles or hooks overnight, and this is especially true for Katy Nichole, the rising star of Centricity Music. Katy has been sharing her songs since she was only fourteen years old. Although her hit song "In Jesus' Name (God of Possible)" may seem like a lucky break that went viral, this is not the case. Katy has been working hard at her craft for many years. (Congratulations, Katy!)
Discovering and nurturing a vibrant inner life is crucial for Christian songwriters. To achieve this, it is important to remember three key factors while striving to deepen and convey your faith through your music.
Make taking care of your soul a top priority. Nowadays, we are all caught up in our busy lives that are filled with chaos and overwhelm, leaving very little time for self-care. Although it is important to show compassion and assist others, we will eventually become exhausted if we neglect our own need for rest and rejuvenation. It is crucial to recognize the significance of looking after ourselves, as it is interconnected with both our mental and physical well-being.
Nourish your intellect. Many Christian songwriters tend to overlook the importance of intellectual growth and assume that solely engaging in Bible study, prayer, and singing worship songs is enough for a devoted life. However, the most talented songwriters understand the significance of reading extensively. They recognize that it is impossible to create extraordinary lyrics without first immersing themselves in an abundance of words. If you haven't continued reading beyond college or even high school, it is essential for you to rekindle your love for books. Merely consuming fear-inducing content or reaffirming your cultural biases through network or cable news is insufficient. If you aspire to write something impactful that can endure long after you're gone, it is crucial to nourish your mind with exceptional literature, poetry, and other sources of inspiration.
Disconnect from negativity. Cable news is solely focused on generating fear to boost their ratings. Even the religious channels aim to provoke anger in order to keep viewers engaged and watch their sponsored advertisements. Talk radio hosts, shock jocks, and even conservative commentators maintain their positions by attracting high ratings and securing sponsorships for their stakeholders. However, the constant stream of negativity they promote is detrimental to your spirit and creativity. Consider abstaining from all forms of news for a few weeks and utilize that time to peacefully reflect on the love and goodness of God. You may find that your positivity begins to overflow into your music. Negativity steals away your happiness and intensifies fear and anxiety. Take a break and allow your heart and mind to be filled with the spirit of Jesus once again.
Christian artists and songwriters such as Nichole, Tomlin, Redman, Maher, and many more are able to create their music by drawing from their deep connection with God. However, their success can also be attributed to their talent and expertise in Christian songwriting. This reminds me of a quote by Australian golfer Gary Player, who famously said that the more he practiced, the more fortunate he became.
While you are working on your Christian songwriting ministry, it is important to also focus on nurturing your spiritual life and personal growth. It is crucial to strive for originality, courage, and freedom in your music, rather than simply reiterating old phrases and concepts that have been heard many times before.
