Sjoerdvankreel has recently made available a free semi-modular synthesizer called Firefly for users of Windows and Linux operating systems. This plugin offers a range of features and can be downloaded at no cost.
I have a strong preference for synthesis systems that are modular and unconventional. Having previously explored InfernalSynth, I am glad to discover that there is a new installment or continuation available.
Currently, Firefly is not as good as its previous version in terms of progress or features. However, it does show a lot of potential for future improvements in the coming months and years.
To start with, Firefly Synth is currently only available for Windows and Linux. Unfortunately, Mac users will have to find an alternative option.
The heart of the synthesizer consists of four oscillators, each offering a variety of operational modes.
You have the option to utilize all four methods to create simple waveforms, two Karplus-Strong algorithms, as well as AM and FM synthesis. However, the absence of granular and additive synthesis limits the range of available synthesis modes. Nonetheless, the provided options still offer a significant amount of capability.
The signal is directed to a section specifically designed for applying effects to each voice separately. There are separate DAHDSR envelopes for each voice that can be further adjusted using individual LFOs and filters. All of these components are connected to a comprehensive mod matrix.
The presence of distortion in each voice of this synth is a noteworthy feature. It is a complete and functional synth, with the exception of not having an FX plugin. It is important to have a good understanding of synthesis in order to fully utilize its capabilities, as there are no pre-existing settings available.
The InfernalSynth was a fantastic tool, so I believe that the Firefly Synth will not only meet but also surpass the capabilities of its predecessor in the future.
This software functions properly on the majority of the computers I use. However, the developer has mentioned that Renoise is not compatible with it. Bitwig, FL Studio, Reaper, and Studio One all work perfectly fine with this software. As for the system requirements, you will need a 64-bit CPU with AVX support if you are using Windows or Linux.
The plugin formats that are compatible are VST3 and CLAP. I really admire the synthesizer for its FM abilities, but I have a weakness for anything that combines different types of synthesis in one complete set.
If you're looking for more choices in terms of modularity, you should definitely consider trying out the impressive ModulAir plugin created by Full Bucket Music and Blocks by Soonth. Another great option available is the VCV Rack, which offers a virtual playground for modular synthesis
Firefly can be downloaded for free.

I'm happy to see another plugin for CLAP. I'm quite fond of the concept and I hope it receives more attention and support.

This synthesizer looks absolutely stunning, even just from the picture I can tell it has a powerful sound engine. I am really excited to experiment and create unique and unusual sounds with it!
