I have a strong affinity for unconventional and modular systems in the realm of synthesis. Having previously explored InfernalSynth, I am delighted to discover that there is a sequel or continuation to it.
Currently, Firefly is not at the same level as its predecessor in terms of progress and features. However, it shows promise for significant growth and improvement in the future.
To begin with, Firefly Synth is currently available only for Windows and Linux. Unfortunately, Mac users will need to seek alternative options as it is not compatible with their operating system.
The fundamental component of the synthesizer is a set of four oscillators, each capable of operating in several distinct modes.
There are four different methods available in this tool that allow you to create simple wave patterns. Additionally, there are two Karplus-Strong algorithms and options for AM and FM synthesis. However, it is unfortunate that granular and additive methods are not included to provide a more comprehensive range of synthesis modes. Despite this, the available options still offer a significant amount of capability and potential.
The per-voice effects section is where this is directed. There are separate DAHDSR envelopes for each voice, which can be further adjusted with per-voice LFOs and filters. All of this is connected to a strong mod matrix.
Distortion can be applied individually to each voice in this synth, which is a fantastic feature. It is a complete and fully operational synthesizer, except for the absence of an effects plugin. To fully utilize it, it is necessary to have a good understanding of synthesis, as there are no pre-existing settings to rely on.
Nevertheless, InfernalSynth proved to be an exceptional tool, leading me to believe that Firefly Synth will not only meet but also surpass the abilities of its predecessor in the future.
The software functions properly on most of the computers I have used. However, the developer mentions that it is not compatible with Renoise. But it works seamlessly with Bitwig, FL Studio, Reaper, and Studio One. As for the system requirements, you will need a 64-bit CPU with AVX support if you are using Windows or Linux.
The synth supports VST3 and CLAP plugin formats. I really appreciate the synth for its FM features, but I'm particularly fond of any software that combines different types of synthesis in one package.
