I absolutely love using modular and unconventional systems for synthesis. Having previously explored InfernalSynth, I am delighted to discover that there is a sequel or continuation to it.
Currently, Firefly is not as advanced or equipped with as many features as its predecessor. However, it shows a lot of promise for future development and growth in the coming months and years.
To begin with, Firefly Synth is currently only available for Windows and Linux operating systems. I apologize to those who use Mac, as you will need to find an alternative option.
The central component of the synthesizer is a group of four oscillators, each offering a variety of operational modes.
You have the option to utilize all four of these methods to create simple waveforms, two Karplus-Strong algorithms, as well as AM and FM synthesis. However, it is unfortunate that granular and additive synthesis modes are not included to provide a complete range of options. Nevertheless, the available options still offer a significant amount of capability.
The audio signal is directed towards a dedicated effects section for each voice. Each voice has its own DAHDSR envelopes that can be adjusted even more using individual LFOs and filters. All of these components are connected to a well-equipped mod matrix.
The presence of distortion is unique to each voice in this synthesizer, which is a valuable feature. Despite the absence of an FX plugin, this synth is capable of performing all its functions. However, it is important to have a good understanding of synthesis in order to fully utilize its capabilities, as there are no pre-existing settings or presets available.
Nevertheless, InfernalSynth was an impressive tool, and I believe that Firefly Synth will not only match but also surpass its predecessor's capabilities in the future.
The software functions properly on the majority of my computer systems. The developer mentions that Renoise is not compatible with it. However, Bitwig, FL Studio, Reaper, and Studio One all work smoothly. In order to use the software, your computer should have a 64-bit CPU with AVX support, whether it is running on Windows or Linux.
The plugin formats that are compatible with this software are VST3 and CLAP. I really appreciate the synthesizer for its FM capabilities, but I am particularly fond of any tool that combines various types of synthesis in one convenient package.
