I really enjoy using unconventional and modular systems for synthesis. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that there is a new release following InfernalSynth, which I had previously covered.
Currently, Firefly is not as advanced or equipped with as many features as its predecessor. However, it shows promise and has the potential to improve significantly in the months and years ahead.
For now, Firefly Synth is only available for Windows and Linux operating systems. Unfortunately, Mac users will need to find alternative options.
The heart of the synthesizer consists of four oscillators, each offering a variety of operational modes.
All four options available can produce simple waveforms and two Karplus-Strong algorithms, as well as AM and FM synthesis. However, it is unfortunate that granular and additive synthesis are not included to complete the range of synthesis modes. Nevertheless, even without these options, the available features still offer a significant amount of power.
This is directed towards a section specifically designed for applying effects to each voice separately. You have separate DAHDSR envelopes for each voice, which can be further adjusted using individual LFOs and filters. All of this is connected to a strong mod matrix.
Distortion is an individual feature for each voice, which is a valuable addition. With the exception of an FX plugin, this synth is fully equipped and capable. To fully utilize its potential, it is necessary to possess a good understanding of synthesis, as there are no pre-existing settings available.
Nevertheless, InfernalSynth was an impressive tool, and I believe that Firefly Synth will surpass its predecessor in terms of capabilities in the future.
The software functions properly on the majority of the hosts I have tested it on. However, the developer has mentioned that Renoise is not compatible with it. On the other hand, Bitwig, FL Studio, Reaper, and Studio One all function without any issues. As for the system requirements, you will need a 64-bit CPU with AVX support if you are using Windows or Linux.
The plugin formats that are compatible are VST3 and CLAP. I really enjoy using this synthesizer because of its FM capabilities, but I'm particularly drawn to any tool that combines different types of synthesis in one bundle.
