Luke Combs and Tracy Chapman Set to Wow Audiences with ‘Fast Car’ Performance at the Grammys

  • by

According to a report from Variety, it is said that Tracy Chapman, who is not known for frequently appearing in public, may make a special appearance at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

According to insiders, Chapman and Luke Combs are set to perform together at an upcoming event. They will be singing "Fast Car," which is Chapman's popular folk-pop song from the late 1980s. The song tells the story of a couple who are determined to break free from the cycle of poverty. Surprisingly, Combs included a cover of this song on his Gettin' Old album in 2023, and it became a huge success, reaching the top of the country radio charts.

If Chapman does decide to perform at the Grammys, it would be unexpected and probably one of the highlights of the night that everyone would be talking about. Based on Variety's report, she has only appeared in front of cameras three times after her latest tour in 2009.

However, Combs has openly expressed his desire to perform "Fast Car" alongside the songwriter and original performer. In July, after his country cover reached the top spot, his team released a statement clarifying that he did not have any immediate plans to perform with Chapman. However, they mentioned that he would be highly enthusiastic if the chance ever presented itself.

Even though she has mostly remained private about the song's sudden popularity, Chapman has released a few statements expressing her support for Combs' success with "Fast Car." When the song reached number one on the country charts, she mentioned being "happy" for Combs and feeling "grateful" that a new generation of fans has embraced her song. She also mentioned that she never anticipated being on the country charts but feels honored to be included.

During the 2023 CMA Awards held in November, the song "Fast Car" was awarded Song of the Year. This particular honor is given exclusively to songwriters, and in this case, it was presented to Chapman. As a result, Chapman became the first Black woman to win the CMA Song of the Year as the sole songwriter. Although Chapman was not physically present at the event, a message from her was conveyed by someone on stage after her victory was announced.

"I regret that I couldn't join you all this evening. It is a great privilege for my song to receive recognition again, 35 years after its first release. I am amazed," the message stated. "I extend my gratitude to the CMAs and a heartfelt thank you to Luke and all the fans of 'Fast Car'."

Combs' song "Fast Car" has been nominated for the Best Country Solo Performance category at this year's Grammy Awards. This nomination is his seventh in total at the ceremony. If he is successful in winning, it will be the first time he receives a prestigious Grammy award.

The Grammy Awards for the year 2024 will be held at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, California. This event is scheduled to take place on Sunday, February 4, 2024. The ceremony will be televised on CBS and can also be streamed live on Paramount+.
