Renowned country singer Margo Smith passed away at the age of 84. This talented musician, who reached the top of the charts in the late 1970s, was also known as "The Tennessee Yodeler" and had a remarkable collection of successful country and Christian songs.
Betty Lou Miller, who later became known as Smith, was born in Dayton, Ohio. Her passion for performing was ignited by a television show in her local area, and she even acquired the skill of yodeling at a young age. However, instead of pursuing her dream of becoming a country star, she chose to pursue a career as a teacher.
According to AllMusic, her unique journey towards fame started when she began singing in her classroom and later during meetings organized by the parent teacher association. This ultimately led to opportunities for radio performances, which then paved the way for her to create a demo record and secure a recording contract.
Starting in 1979, Smith started to openly express her femininity. One of her notable achievements during this time was the Top 10 hit "Still a Woman" from her album titled A Woman, which showcased her remarkable courage and confidence.
In the chorus, she sings "Close the door and switch off the light / The plane is set to take flight tonight / Hold on tight as we soar through the sky / Remember, I am still a woman."
In 1979, Smith's album "Just Margo" had a bold cover where she was depicted wearing only a satin robe. This was considered daring at the time, although in 2024, the outfit may resemble more of a housecoat. Despite a decline in her popularity on country radio, Smith's openness about sexuality and her provocative performances helped boost ticket sales for her concerts.
Out of nowhere, she abruptly returned to her former role as a teacher in Ohio and showed remorse for this particular phase in her life. Music Row highlights that in 1983, she began embracing the identity of the Tennessee Yodeler, but ten years later, she transitioned into more conservative beliefs. Alongside her daughter Holly, she transformed into Margo Smith and Holly, a successful Christian country duo.
During the later stages of her life, Smith relocated to Florida where she dedicated her time to yodeling. She made a living by imparting her knowledge of yodeling to others, with one of her most prominent students being Taylor Ware, who was the runner-up on America's Got Talent in 2006. Eventually, she returned to Nashville and passed away on January 23 at the age of 84.
She had experienced a stroke only a short time ago. Smith's loved ones who continue to live on are her husband Richard Cammeron, as well as her son, two daughters, and other relatives.
Instead of sending flowers, the family is kindly requesting donations to be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
